Do posix builds work on Macs ? NO

Post by Lone_Wolf »

While looking at targets supported by Make I noticed several are labelled as posix-* .
There were also mentions of oolite "known to be running on BSDs"

Apple OS X is often said to be posix compliant with the BSD styles.
The binaries on the oolite github releases page are labeled as linux-* but are created through the posix-* targets.

Is someone willing to test those binaries on apple macs ?

I'm happy to do what I can. But I'm not a programmer and don't even understand what you have written above. I use an old Mac and also have access to an M1 chip Mac.

They simply will not work on Macs. They are binaries for GNU linux systems, and only fairly specific ages of those, depending when the binaries were built.

The question is : has that ever been put to the test ?

Download https://github.com/OoliteProject/oolite ... x86_64.tgz
extract it to some temporary location and you'll see oolite-1.90-test.linux-x86_64.run .

Try to execute that file.

First this:

Code: Select all

./oolite-1.90-test.linux-x86_64.run
Verifying archive integrity... All good.

Install Oolite system-wide or in your home directory? [s/H] H
Installing Oolite in "/Users/maikschulz/GNUstep/Applications/Oolite"...
-n Copying oolite executable and resources...
Done.
-n Extracting AddOns/Basic-debug.oxp...
Done.
-n Extracting documentation...

Finished!

-n To start Oolite from a shell,
run "/Users/maikschulz/GNUstep/Applications/Oolite/oolite".
To uninstall Oolite, run "/Users/maikschulz/GNUstep/Applications/Oolite/uninstall".
Then this (omitting the contents of the readme):

Code: Select all

./GNUstep/Applications/Oolite/oolite
This is the first time you've run the game. Here is the README file -
more docs can be found at Oolite/doc/
Press q to exit this document and launch the game

/Users/maikschulz/GNUstep/Applications/Oolite/oolite.app/oolite-wrapper: line 69: ./oolite.app/oolite: cannot execute binary file

Erk. It looks like Oolite died with an error. When making an error
report, please copy + paste the log above into the report.
Too bad!
