Windows testers needed for modernised build

Post by mcarans »

There is a new modernised Windows build: https://github.com/mcarans/oolite_windo ... /tag/0.0.2

Please could any Windows Oolite players give it a try and report success or issues here. Thanks a lot!

I tried it today, everything looks good, even HDR, as expected.
One thing I noticed is that I couldn't use 7zip to "install" it (it seems the compression algorithm is not one known by 7zip) by just copying from the exe file.
Other than that, the only other drawback I found was the cache creation stutters (at least that's what I think it was): during the first couple of jumps some "first time actions" led to sort of blocking. Once I got to the end of my regular milk-run preparation, though (3 jumps and trading), things stabilized.
I could also "plug-in" my BPlanets works (mostly shader adjustments), without any trouble.

Glad to hear that it looks good. I'm not sure what could have changed regarding using 7zip - it is still nsis that creates the installer. I'm also unsure what could cause initial stuttering. On a fresh install of the standard Oolite, do you also see this or is it something new?

I've made release 0.0.3 which uses the system nspr: https://github.com/mcarans/oolite_windo ... /tag/0.0.3

It will probably play exactly the same as 0.0.2 but let me know if you find otherwise (whether bad or good).

Hi mcarans

I tried OoliteInstall-1.91.0.7726-251025-416a81a-win-test.exe. My testing went as follows.

Load a commander. Look at some station screens.

Launch. Force misjump. Get annihilated by Thargoids. And again. And again. (I'm out of practice, alright?)

Launch. Force misjump. See empty interstellar space - courtesty of my Interstellar Tweaks OXP. Switch to an external view. See amazing image. And . . the game hangs, though I managed to return to my desktop.

In another thread just now I was boasting about how my Interstellar Tweaks OXP never crashes. But perhaps the problem was the Oolite build?

The log is here.

Thanks for testing the newer Oolite build. The hanging issue is tricky to test. I can see 2 errors in your log:

Code: Select all

00:43:28.605 [gnustep]: 2025-12-15 00:43:28.605 oolite[13692:16304] File NSPropertyList.m: 1008. In parsePlItem Missing semicolon in dictionary at line 29 char 946
This may mean a plist file is not correct somehow, but there isn't any info to identify in which plist file parsePlItem sees a missing semicolon. The log continues after the error though which may suggest that this isn't what caused the hanging.

Code: Select all

0:43:30.328 [texture.load.png.error]: ***** A PNG loading error occurred for ../AddOns/thargoid_carrier2.0.oxp/Textures/thargoid-carrier.png: bad adaptive filter value.
This sounds like a corrupt png file. Maybe the older png library in previous Oolite builds didn't notice the problem. The error occurs multiple times in your log though which suggests that it doesn't necessarily cause the hanging issue.

Please can you try this more up to date build to see if it also has the issue: https://github.com/mcarans/oolite_windo ... n-test.exe

I tested that PNG file by loading it into (1) Windows' Paint, (2) GIMP (again on Windows) and in both cases it worked and neither case did the program show me an error message or warning.

Also: with the latest test build, and the previous test build, Windows (10) is not showing the program as installed. That is: there is no Oolite entry within the (old) Add/Remove Programs window nor in the (newer) 'Aero/Metro/Modern' window.

I'll report back on how the latest test build - the one you linked - works. But I'll post this message now in case, during testing, the system locks up hard.

Right: I did not manage to reproduce the hang, but that might be because I did not manage to trigger exactly the same Interstellar Tweaks scenario, though I did end up in an Interstellar Tweaks scenario that was similar to the one that I had when there was the hang. I'll test by making the Tweaks trigger the scenario that accompanied the hang. (If I manage to re-create the hang, then I will see whether I can do so on the unmodernised build too, in which case the bug is with core-game code that has not changed and/or with my AddOn.)

I did see a misrendered Thargoid carrier - grey on top and black from behind. (I tried and failed to get a screenshot.) I haven't seen that with the normal (pre-'modernised') builds.

Log.
