Dearly beloved, we are gathered to commemorate the passing of Charlie's 'puter. IT has brought great things into this Oolite world of ours but now has passed on to a place we cannot follow.

Open your Book of Giles (Lave Edition) to Chapter 12:
'Giles is my Coder, I shall not want,
He maketh me view Code of green text,
He leadeth me by still monitors,
He restoreth my hard drive, he leadeth me in the paths of Ooliteness for His Game's sake.
And yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of Debugging,
I shall fear no Crashes, for thou art with me
His Mac and His Python, they comfort me
Thou preparest an shipdata.plist before me in the presence of mine enemies
thou anointest my Addons folder with oxps; my RAM runneth over.
Surely Eliteness and trading shall follow me all the days of my life:
and I will dwell in the house of Giles for ever.'

(apologies to any other Christians)

Perhaps I could add a bit to the grief. The screen of my MacBook Pro (under a year old!) has a serious problem: the background light is off. Currently I am using a used external monitor (800x600 :SIGH: ) that clearly has seen its best days. Even with brightness and contrast fully up every darker color appears just black.

And do you know what is REALLY sad: I can't have fixed it for quite a while, because according to Apple's support website there is NOT A SINGLE authorized Apple dealer IN MY WHOLE CONTINENT!!!!!! And I certainly won't give my computer to some filthy backyard repair shop. So I'll have to wait until I get to good old Europe in a few month's time.

Well, your location is the south-eastern corner of Galaxy 3!

You'll need to move to a planet with a higher tech level.

In RealWorld: I'd really like to do that. But I also really like it here where I am: one of the most beautiful places in the world, but in terms of tech level WAAAAAAAAY back.

In the game: Well, yes, but... Equilibrium is about (among other things) the low-tech worlds in that forgotten corner of the galaxy fighting for technological advancement (and against each other). And there is also, sitting in the gateway to that region, the planet Mabelala (TL 13), "mostly known for its inhabitants' silly love for Zero-G cricket and for the Mabelala Institute of Technology (MIT)".

Actually it's East Africa, which is technologically spoken way more back than Antarctica, where most of the inhabited places would be (I guess) well-equipped research stations.

Want to read a good joke? In one of the threads somebody mentioned having moved to a place where he has got no ADSL-connection right now.

Well, okay. Where I am living we have got an ISP that is guaranteeing me the unbelievable speed of (Fasten Your Seatbelts, Ladies And Gentlemen!) 5 Kbps. And that's of course under ideal circumstances and as long as it's not raining, in which case he's just shutting down his the whole server for the next few hours, in order to avoid lightning stroke.

@Charlie - Oh no! All those beautiful ships...

Where are you based? (uk?).

I was just about to put my 5yr olds old cpu/mobo/memory on eBay (as she's now got my old 1.2GHz Celeron) - its an old 850MHz Duron on a Giga-byte board (4xAGP) and I think 512MB of PC100 (might only be 384). I could loan it to you as a stopgap - I think it would just about run Oolite although your 3d packages would probably choke.

If you're interested and its practical to get it to you let me know either on the BB or via a PM.

This post brought to you via my wife's laptop:
( Momentarily prized from her grasp, so I'll hopefully be able to lurk on the forum for time to time... )

Thanks for the kind replies...

Captain Hesperus: Thanks ( no offence taken  )

Commander McLane: What can I say but... Bugger!

A very kind chap has e-mailed me with the offer of a replacement BIOS, so I hope the problem realy is the well known DFI thing:

'I DFI therefore I auto-lobotomise'

A dead mobo will be hard to rectify...
-Ultra-B: rare as rocking-horse poo.
-My copy of XP has been nLite'd to the Nth degree so no chance of getting up & running on alt hardware ( 3D software licences tied to my current install )
-Parenthood saps one of ones resources...

Here's hoping that light @ the end of the tunnel isn't a train!

I've got a system or three that are collecting dust up in the garage. Nothing stellar (please pardon the pun), but they are P-4's. Shipping to the UK might be a bit expensive...more than a new mobo?

To DaddyHoggy & reills:

Your offers are immensely kind & most appreciated - Thank You! :D

I guess all three of us must be posting @ the same time...

As it happens I've been offered a replacement BIOS ( the usual problem with Ultra-B's ) & I'll be up & running...

A dead mobo leaves me pretty well stuffed ( in spite of your very kind offers ) for the reasons I mentioned above.

P.S.
My job has left me with a generally rather low opinion of my fellow man.
Thanks for proving me wrong! :)
Every cloud has a silver lining... as they say.
