What does the average prize and the estimated difference help? I know trading only as a sudden urge to finally once and for all try the noble path of the merchants, it has to be managable somehow... so you buy a shitton of something you consider reasonably prized, realize that the destination system has exactly the same prize. After a parade of thargoids, pirates and supernovae you eventually forget about it, jump a galaxy and end up trading what has not been destroyed in desperate skirmishes for some random prize, hoping to at least get some profit. Market Observer's average price is calculated from all the systems one has so far visited. This is important as there are an umpteen-and-one OXPs affecting the prices and thus once one has visited enough for a decent average, one ends up with an average for one's very own cocktail recipe of OXPs.
But the main thing is the known disparities between the different economies. In vanilla oolite there is a spectrum between the poor agriculturals and the rich industrials (Stranger's World adds in a third economic pole for mining economies). The best milk runs are between the poor agriculturals (cheapest food/wines/furs - pay most for machinery/computers/luxuries) and the rich industrials (cheapest machinery/computers/luxuries - pay most for food/wines/furs). Examples are Isinor <> Ensoreus, Ararus <> Ensoreus, Laenin <> Xexedi, Erlage <> Rigeti etc. All the other economies fit in the middle.
So when you visit the middling economies (eg Qucerere, a "mainly agricultural") you will have a much better idea as to how good a deal the various goods on offer actually are.
Trading works on knowing where you are going next (looking at the map and seeing what the economies are in your area and just beyond). Then you can buy cheap locally to sell at a profit at your next stop (or maybe the one just after). Again, buying at a poor industrial and selling at a rich industrial is unlikely to make much if any money.

So! I ended up buying cheapish computers (68.2₢) and gambling on reasonable deals at Qucerere (mainly agricultural - so no great bargains) where I sold them for 84.5₢ and bought Furs again (68.7₢) but there were only 23 on sale. So I also bought wine/liquors (28.3₢) and more platinum at 68₢.
Then flew to Aona. Tried to find a rock hermit (I had wines to sell him - and he would have paid better than the main orbital station), but failed dismally. At Aona main station I sold everything (Furs at 86.7₢, wine at 36.3₢, Gold at 41.4₢, Platinum at 77.1₢, gems at 21.5₢).
We now have 7,775₢ in the kitty. Militaries will cost 6,000₢ minus a 1,000₢ refund for the beam. You need to decide if you want your military on the back (for sniping) or in the front.
Computers will cost 62.3 x 35 = 2,180.5₢ which will leave 595₢ or so.
I have purposefully not bought external heat shielding. We seem to have some trumbles breeding in our hold, and the heat shielding will make barbecuing them more difficult. Do you prefer them medium rare or well done?

</plist>I know the basics of trading in theory, but i was only pointing out how the actual practical experience allmost everytime turned out for me. Most of the time it seems to take a lot of travelling to actually find a place with a decent margin, regardless of economical data or governmental type. Main problem is forgetting the price you bought at imo.
I do feel like i haven't really 'earned' the military laser though. Also, i trust in everyone that they do not manipulate the game by editing the savegames. Perhaps some sort of checksum or something is worth considering.
Btw: why is Usralaat highlighted in longe range galactic chart, and also: we have trumbles?

AI Trading Assistant - it was all nicely linked in but he's changed things around. Buy it and see how it changes your game. A good sense of humour will make it hugely enjoyable.

I tend to become overwhelmed with the djungle of versions and compatible OXPs so i strive for the vanillaest, plainest, lightweightest and most intrinsic versions there are. Of course it should be the, for these criteria, latest version possible in order to avoid compatibility reasons. I haven't actually found a way to get into OXPs, i would break it down to simple fomo, you cannot immerse into the plots and features of one OXP when there is a muddle of other OXPs. Is there some kind of overview, like a tree-format or something that deciphers versions and the respective compatibilities?

Shield Boosters have a major effect on the shields - almost doubling their strength. So that makes sense to me. Passenger cabins less so - one does better with trade and the other contracts from what I've read here and elsewhere. I usually position myself for trading. So Lave > Zaonce is a poor trade, but Zaonce > Isinor is much, much better. And then Isinor <> Tionisla. And then Witchfuel Injectors and a pylon-mounted OXP fuel tank. Once I have those, I can bounce between Isinor & Qutiri making even more dosh and with enough spare fuel to out-run any pirates. Until I have beam lasers. And then back to Ensoreus to get other goodies (repair bots & better shields). Playing with Weapon Laws, fewer places have beams for sale, and one really has to travel (Biarge or Xexedi) to get Militaries - and with my poor combat skills those trips are nail-biting!
Usralaat might be an accidental invocation of Cody's Square.

This is what I have said since a fortnight after the in-game expansion manager was unveiled. A continuous list displaying 10 entries at a time, out of almost 800 in total, is hopeless. We need them organized into a tree. I suppose when it comes to multiplayer-setups the version matters the most. Agreeing on what version we play probably has one of the highest priorities in this topic. So far we have tested ElitePlus and Oolite Strict-Version where i have v1.90 installed. I remember playing v1.7something from pulse-laser with 100 Cr to a respectable journey with a lot of patience. Edit: i flew another jump in order to stay on topic. The docked station is an average agricultural system on the way to Edinso. Looking at the prizes i estimate e.g. computers at 95.2 Cr/t relatively valuable, in reference to @Cholmondely's remark about 'middling systems'. I vaguely remember seeing it for something between 60 and 70 Cr too. I remember reading in old Handbooks that average agricultural systems pay higher prizes for computers in order to better develop. However, i would never have seen it if i had computers in stock, that proves my point regarding trading. I also realize that the Gold and Gemstones were sold too, this was unintentional as it doesn't eat up too much cargo hold.

Bought Gold, Platinum & Gems en route from Biramabi - and sold both lasers to do it. Bought Furs at Isinor (cheaper there than elsewhere). At Tionisla & Zaonce sold all the above and made a good-ish profit. Bought back the front military and also an Advanced Navigational Array since you are clearly into the missions - we're a lo-o-o-ng way from the Xexedi<>Laenin milk run! Not quite enough spare cash to buy back the rear beam once I'd bought the ANA. We should be able to buy it back at most of the other stops if we have enough loose dosh.
See wiki page for instructions on using ANA - there are three settings, only one gives the fastest route (needed for your contracts).
If we need to get a maintenance overhaul we will need to do so at either Relaes or Edinso (better).

Had company throughout the system not just the corridor, i could have scooped up some valuables but the bay was full again. If i may allow myself to remark: maybe really slow down on things. One or two jumps at a time, while the discussion about mid- and long-term strategies casually evolves in the thread. There is no much room for objections scince economical decisions depend on spontaneous opportunities, but you could do so when you save the game directly after docking and before deciding for commodities, equipment or contracts. Leave some cargo space for eventual in-flight-loot. And yes perhaps get a passenger cabin.

Sold furs for 70.5₢. Could not buy 35TC of Computers, there were only 15 on sale (79.1₢) and so added 20TC of machinery (56.2₢)
Sold the platinum (74₢) - but the gems price was not great.

Sold computers for 101.8₢ & machinery for 63.9₢. Bought cheap gold (37.3₢).
