I can certainly upload the mp4 somewhere, but can’t a YouTube link be embedded in a reddit thread? I would’ve thought that would be better than sharing an almost 100mb file?Cholmondely wrote: ↑Sun Jul 13, 2025 12:05 amIs there a download which I can upload to the Reddit thread? They prefer .mp4 or .mov formats and I presume that the size will not be an issue.

I can certainly link to your YouTube page, but I thought that it might be nice to have the film itself showing on the Reddit page. If it was uploaded to our wiki, could we then have it showing on the Oolite page as well as on the Oolite.space site?phkb wrote: ↑Sun Jul 13, 2025 12:55 amI can certainly upload the mp4 somewhere, but can’t a YouTube link be embedded in a reddit thread? Thanks!
I put it up a couple of hours ago - 79 views already. This compares to 73 views in 3 days (?) on YouTube.
And YouTube have yet to realise that it belongs in their Oolite film collection! Oh dearie, dearie me.

Current state of play:
Original YouTube post: 101 views in 4 days, no comments, and YouTube has still to work out that it is an Oolite film!
Reddit r/Oolite thread post: 638 views in 1 day, 3 comments (including Astrobe & Rxke)
Reddit r/OpenSourceGames thread post: 432 views in 2 hours, 1 comment (it works on "Steam Deck")
Reddit r/FreeGames thread post: 483 views in 3 hours, no comments - would not accept the film, just text and a crosslink to the film
1) do our 3 download versions (AppleMac/Windows/Linux) have updated "Expansions Manager urls" yet?
2) any ideas about where else I could post Phkb's film?

Re: "This is Oolite" Youtube video
Well, given that *neither* of my Oolite videos appears in that collection, I suspect the problem is with me and specifically, what tags are added to the videos. I'll do a bit of research and see what I can find.another_commander wrote: ↑Mon Jul 14, 2025 11:20 amand YouTube has still to work out that it is an Oolite film!

Current state of play:
Original YouTube post: 117 views in 4 days, no comments
r/Oolite thread post: 883 views in 1 day, 4 comments (including Astrobe, Rxke & Zirael)
r/OpenSourceGames thread post: 1,300 views in 11 hours, 1 comment
r/FreeGames thread post: 1,600 views in 11 hours, no comments - would not accept the film, just text and a crosslink to the film
r/Linux_Gaming: 806 views in 30 minutes, 2 comments, one from a chap who played back in 2006 and loves the new graphics!
r/MacGaming: 958 views in 50 minutes, I comment from a chap who worries about playing it on his brand new Mac
Still to get blitzed: r/spacesimgames (initial post failed dismally!), r/Games, r/gaming, r/IndieGaming
Apologies for going on and on about this... but I find it quite fascinating!
Actually, it seems utterly unreal! I wonder how many of these viewings are really only partial or are double/triple counts.
Appendix:
1) Video Views: Facebook counts a view if someone watches a video for at least 3 seconds. This includes both organic and paid views. "Facebook counts a view if someone watches a video for at least 3 seconds."
2) What Counts as a View on Reddit
*Clicking on a Post: A view is counted when a user clicks on a post to open it. This is the primary way Reddit tracks views. "Total views MUST only mean people who CLICK on the post, not scroll past it..."
*Non-Reddit Users: Users who do not have a Reddit account but still click on a post also count towards the view count. "People who do not have an account with Reddit who CLICK on the post must count too."
*Bot Exclusion: Reddit is supposed to exclude bot activity from the view count. "Bots MUST NOT be included."
3) What Does Not Count as a View on Reddit
*Scrolling Past: Simply scrolling past a post does not count as a view. "Not necessarily unique as posts gain views from scrolling by them."
*Creator's Own Views: There is some ambiguity about whether the creator's own views are counted, but generally, they are not supposed to be. "If I had made the app, it wouldn't count the creator themselves looking at their own stuff."
