Starting in a different galaxy

1) It disrupts the vanilla game missions in G1-3 for first time players.

That's true of any alternative start. You're the one who started a discussion about starting on later charts, what's your plan for dealing with that disruption?

It's an OXP. If it is slightly "hidden" (eg, not in the Expansions Manager), then only seasoned players should find it.

2) They will use the Galactic(tm) hyperdrive once they're bored with going back and forth between the same two worlds, building sufficient credits/kills/xp, and feel they are ready to begin playing in earnest.

Will they? If seasoned players, fair enough. But if seasoned players, then they don't need it.



As regards 3, there will be some pirates, no? However few. And also Thargoids.

Maybe yours would work better as part of a Neophyte flavour on Oolite Starter? Then you could include your Oolite Equipment Images !

I've tried to follow the example of Lave - starting at a wealthier agricultural (affordable but not the cheapest food) with a better not-utterly-lethal milk run nearby.

I presume that this OXP would only be downloaded/used by somebody who has already some familiarity with Oolite.

Right up in the top-right corner near Ceesex, or whatever it's called. Some might consider that a blatant cheat. Where is the motivation for the player to set out in earnest to cross the chart?

Lave <> Orerve <> Onrira (TL14) - 2 jumps

vs

Velete <> Inleus <> Gerete <> Arazaes <> Ceesxe (TL15) - 4 jumps


I know of no equipment purchasable at TL15 Ceesxe which is not also purchasable at TL14 Onrira. Certainly not in my OXP cocktail, at any rate. What else is there at Ceesxe?

New Cargoes? When I last visited, major exports included Soinlorate Littlesdottir's Higgs Bosons, AIs, Wooden furniture and Factory Equipment. I suspect that the bosons might be a passing fad. Onrira exports AIs, Factory Equipment & Yak Wool. You are really that desperate for Wooden furniture? Was the thunder storm really that bad?

I didn't know about it; as previously mentioned, I don't watch television. I can assure that both prospective prime-ministers are loathsome characters. Although Albanese is slightly more loathsome, neither deserve any respect.

So there are 8 entries for 3 start choices. Why? 5 unused ones for 5 unused galaxies?

Realised I'd missed this question.

The 5 unused ones were from a previous iteration of the mod where I had 8 different starting locations, 1 for each galaxy. After some feedback it was clear this was too many choices: with nothing to distinguish between them, it wasn't really a choice, more like a lucky dip. So I reduced the list to 3 (easy, medium and hard).

I'm after a decent name before I put up a wiki page with that name!

I do think that "Other Galactic Starts" is a better description, but there might be something even better yet.




I'm also ruminating about starting in G7.

With a Lave start it takes a non-trivial amount of time to get to G7. What Littlebear has done, in my eyes, works as a reward for all those hours and hours of gameplay. Am I wrecking things for new players by facilitating a G7 start?

So, we already have Start Choices (2013) and Start Choices Addenda (2018?). If you did not already know what they do, how would you guess from the name alone? Adder Start (2017), though, is self-explanatory.

Start Choices gives choices mostly based on easiness, Addenda based on career.

As you can see, I fear that "Alternative Starts" would just add to the confusion.
