It's a freighter and they started out in the (mostly illegal) cargo business. Solo's past career in this business is responsible for big chunks of the plot of the second and third films. It's good enough for me.

I think you drifted significantly far from the topic you set, if you'd allow the Nostromo:-

...stories / films / whatever about space traders - people who fly the spacelanes in ships that they own themselves, transporting cargo either for a customer or for sale, etc., whether legally or not. It must be a MAJOR part of the story, not something that is mentioned once in a while...

Some examples are painfully obvious but I really don't care!

It was plainly just a narrative device to get the characters into the otherworldly setting instantaneously, much like the TARDIS or the "transporter" in Star Trek. Do we even know what sort of trade the Nostromo was supposedly engaged in?

Also, you didn't ask who, what or where Whyte Yarcowie is, so...

I vaguely remember that being on TV once. When I say "vaguely", I mean that I can confirm such a movie exists - that's all.
