PC v1.65 crashes first time I leave port.

Post by eliross »

Hi guys, I just downloaded Oolite and I'm really excited to check it out but it crashes whenever I try to leave the first port. Here's my stderr. Thanks for any advice.

PC Oolite is quite memory hungry. If you play with all OXPs in you really need 1 G of Ram. I play with 750M and occasionally get crashes.

Close your Internet Browser and shut down your virus protection (these tend to chew up a lot of Ram) and any other programes you are not using and give it another go.

Oolite 1.65 is pretty stable, but doesn't like having to swap to disk!

If that fails, try a re-install. Sometimes Oolite just "goes funny" and reinstalling tends to work!

I've got 2 gigs of ram, shouldn't be a problem. I've tried reinstalling and running in different resolution windowed and full screen. I've also tried different versions of ATI's openGL driver. Still the same problem. When I have my own internet connection (versus scamming of free wireless hotspots in Bangkok) I'll download some earlier versions of the game to see if they run. It's probably just a simple graphic improvement that I might be able to turn off in later versions.

2 G is ample, but it could be a Graphics Card Driver problem. I'd check your drivers, but otherwise I'm a bit stumped. Lack of RAM or a bad driver tend to be the main problems with Oolite crashing.

In past experience ATi made rubbish OpenGL drivers - might be worth looking out for some 3rd party ones to try (I think you can still get Wicked and miniGL which I used in my old ATi and Voodoo days)

Do you have any other OpenGL games that play OK? Problem is that this is no guarantee since ATI will actually make an effort to include "fixes" in their Catalyst for modern OpenGL games (not that there are many now - even the Doom and Quake series they switched to Direct X).

Good luck.

It sounds like this may be related to my "Oolite unstable on my PC" as I have an ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder 9700 running in my box. Even with 1GB RAM and freeing up 750MB of it through "SpeedUpMyPC" I still am invited to talk with Mr. Dialtone frequently

The puter is 3-years old now. Maybe time to upgrade, with or without Vista, but with NVidia.

I give Up

I've tried installing some tweaked ATI drivers and software and tried tweaking the card myself with no success. ATI's openGL has been, and continues to be a piece of crap. ATI's talking about opensourcing parts of their drivers with an eye towards Linux users. Maybe in a year or so we'll have some true third party drivers for ATI, but probably not for my old laptop. I'm buying a new computer in a couple months, I'll check the game out then. Thanks.

@Eliross - sorry to hear you've had no luck - I think I got Quake3 running on an ATi Rage 128 Pro using miniGL or WickedGL. I've probably still got the websites tucked away in my favourites or you could Google for them. Hope you keep reading the forums - so you know what you're getting in to when you finally get a machine that will support the game.
