If my videos are in any way involved in the June 6 bump, it's probably more complex than that. It's more likely that episode 3.17 caused YouTube's alchemical algorithm to surface the Oolite 1.9 unmodded episode 1 back onto relevant viewers' suggestions feed. I get maybe 20-30 viewers of new episodes each time they release, 4x a month (120 views a month), but the unmodded ep 1 gets around 300-400 every month like a tiny plastic train without brakes.Cholmondely wrote: ↑Tue Aug 15, 2023 9:39 amOolite (1.9) - Let's Play Poorly - 3.17 - Zadies or Bust was published on 3rd June

The ordinary player will not need them.phkb wrote: ↑Tue Aug 15, 2023 10:03 pmOverly complicated, to be honest. Whether they’re ships or equipment or new explosions or major changes to the commodities market, they’re being added onto the existing game. For a player (and I’m talking specifically about players here, not those working on expansions) that’s all that matters. We don’t need to overthink this. They’re AddOns or Expansions, that can happen to have one of two extensions, either OXP or OXZ.
It’s only when you descend into the tweaking/coding side of things that any of those finer points matter, and by that stage players should be familiar enough with the basics that the extra definitions won’t matter so much.
It is kind of like design patterns. You would not talk about those to users I guess. Yet, when talking to developers you need such terms.
It seems the decision is taken, and it is ok for me. Let's just add that to the dictionary so we stay consistent.

Re: WE ARE DESTROYING OUR FUTURE!!
Well, I haven't merged it yet. I was trying out using "Expansions" and "AddOns", and found "AddOns" created awkward sentence structures. "Expansions" flows better when you put it in a sentence. Still happy to bat it around, though!

Re: WE ARE DESTROYING OUR FUTURE!!
If it reads better, even the better! I am absolutely ok with the term. All I am asking for is to stay consistent where we can.
So we can agree that 'Expansions' is what we call it.
I can trigger the merge and will update OoliteStarter which then rightfully is an external Expansion Manager, as opposed to the in-game Expansion Manager.
BTW, the latest prerelease should detect your nested structure by now.

Re: WE ARE DESTROYING OUR FUTURE!!
I'll be honest, I don't think "expansions" is the best word.
An "expansion" in game terms is a very specific thing for most people reading the word in that context. It's what has come now to be termed "DLC" for the most part.
"AddOn" is better, though I understand how it can make sentences weird.
Have we already discarded the well-worn, extremely familiar term that virtually every tinkering gamer will know? Aka, "mod."

Re: WE ARE DESTROYING OUR FUTURE!!
I was about to ask the same.
Not only is 'mod' more familiar but strictly speaking it's also more accurate.
'Expansion' and 'Add On' are both, well, additive, whereas 'Mod' remains flexible.

Then let me throw in the word 'plugin'.arquebus wrote: ↑Wed Aug 16, 2023 6:17 pmI'll be honest, I don't think "expansions" is the best word.

I’ll try using Mods in the doc and see how it goes.
Re: WE ARE DESTROYING OUR FUTURE!!
"Plugin" is another good one. To my ears it feels more exclusively additive (as Redspear put it) than "mod" does, but it definitely doesn't come with the baggage of "expansion."

Re: WE ARE DESTROYING OUR FUTURE!!
Actually we achieved something:
Our website has become maintainable again. I believe we shoulld document how it works but it is one of the breakthroughs we needed.
Can we update our todo list, and maybe rename this thread to MOGA?

Re: WE ARE DESTROYING OUR FUTURE!!
And speaking of awkward...
If there's a unified location for add-ons/mods/expansions/total conversions/etc...
Maybe it'll get around one problem I've run into numerous times in the past where I put an add-on in the AddOns folder that didn't have its folder name end in .oxp -- and I wonder why the mod didn't work!
...Because if even the experts sometimes forget, newer players (who just started trying to manually add old OXPs) are not going to have a fun time of it.

Working here! Can't answer for the expansion manager though.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!
