IIRC Oolite is based on CP's reverse engineered source code of Elite, which was TNK. Apparently it took him nearly 3 years and according to those that know these things it was a monumental piece of work. It certainly opened the door for Elite on a PC, and made it playable again, for us old timers. Check out his website here

So he is! I've pinged him a mail to say "Hi". Hope him and IB (if IB's still involved it looked like he might not be from the wording of the page) finally get DF out although its got to go somewhere pretty amazing to beat Oolite.

I've still got an old (but at the time incredible expensive) HP 800CT laptop (P133) - I used to take it away with me when I went away on Trials just so I could play Elite TNK.

IIRC Oolite is not actually related to TNK - it shares no code.

True - but CPs reverse engineering of the original code gave a lot of insight to others that followed and this I guess includes Giles and Oolite...
