Re: Science Fiction Trivia
Does Claptrap become an assassin as a matter of choice or is this forced upon them by malware or something?

There's Judge Dredd's domestic robot, Walter the Wobot - the only robot not to join Call-Me-Kenneth's robot rebellion.

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
Definitely - he's nauseatingly helpful which has the unexpected side effect of annoying Dredd, so that's a good answer and an MBP for the side effect.Disembodied wrote: ↑Tue Mar 14, 2023 11:35 amThere's Judge Dredd's domestic robot, Walter the Wobot - the only robot not to join Call-Me-Kenneth's robot rebellion.
No more from Judge Dredd or related strips (unrelated 2000 AD strips are OK).
Two to go!

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
Hints
One in a children's novel of the very early 20th century
Several in British TV shows of the sixties and seventies, especially in children's TV
There's one in an eighties TV show that has a connection to The Monkees.
At least one in a film of the eighties, and several in a film made earlier this century.

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
I somehow think we have different definitions of helpful - homicidal mania doesn't seem quite right.

I think I'm still going to have to say no - I was looking for genuinely benevolent machines, with a possibility that benevolence has unintended consequences.cbr wrote: ↑Mon Mar 20, 2023 3:24 amAt first he's a robby then it goes horribly wrong...ffutures wrote: ↑Mon Mar 20, 2023 2:20 am

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
Another clue - there are at least two very different cinematic robots called Johnny that would easily qualify.

There's D84, the "undercover" android from the 1977 Doctor Who story "The Robots of Death".

Works for me - it's about the one robot that isn't killing people in this story, and seems to be a better class of robot all round. I like that there's someone called Borg in the story!
One to go!

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
at the risk of naming the 5th robot... lol
if one of your robots is Johnny 5 from short circuit then im not sure if he actually fits your description.
he was built as a military security robot with firepower , gun or laser i cant remember. it was only after being hit by lightning that he became sentient and rejected the Military life..lol

Arthur: OK. Leave this to me. I'm British. I know how to queue.
OR i could go with
Arthur Dent: I always said there was something fundamentally wrong with the universe.
or simply

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
Johnny 5 was one of the ones I was thinking of - as soon as he becomes sentient and has a choice he rejects violence. But if you're not happy with that one there is another that you can probably think of. Although he does have the bad luck to run into Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is for once NOT playing a robot....spud42 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 23, 2023 12:50 pmat the risk of naming the 5th robot... lol

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
Number five is alive, and handing you the poison chalice. If anyone was wondering, the other Johnny was the Johnny Cab from Total Recall, who is a nice helpful robot, just not very good at understanding what people want when it isn't crystal clear. The consequences of that are entirely Arnie's fault...
