Witchspace/Hyperspace jump sequences

Post by Cholmondely »

We currently have 4 of these in Oolite (and a misjump sequence for each, too).

1) Vanilla game (concentric blue circles)
2) Original BGS (purple/pink Spiderweb effect)
3) Current BGS (purple/blue honeycomb effect)
4) SOTL's Spiderweb variant (involves steering through the tunnel)

I'm just curious - how is this done in other games? Is there anything which we could think of adding - or changing?

I'm inspired in this by the Cherryh books and her descriptions of the dangers of hyperspace travel. Alliance Rising features two heroes who are hyperjump navigators (with various eccentric traits due to their profession), while Merchanter's Luck describes the dangers of solo jump.

Just a thought, but perhaps someone could make a version that spirals and whirls in purple and blackness to give the player a taste of the queasiness and giddyness that doubtless would result from passing (out) through the twisting of space-time. Is such an animation feasible within Oolite as it stands at present?

(I'm a huge fan of the Cherryh books too - my perennial faves Downbelow Station and then the Chanur saga (I've lost count how many times I've read them! - in the middle of re-reading Downbelow right now, as it happens))
