Would it be possible to have future PC versions not reporting all these validity errors in the stderr.txt? They don't seem very useful and they clutter up the error reports. I don't think that they get them on Mac and Linux either.
Not without creating a custom version of the gnustep backend shared lib, which is what I think Winston did for Linux.
I'll take that as a no (those fancy words sound like it's a lot of work for such a small thing). It could have been something that only required changing a line of code - what do I know
Thanks for your quick answer.

OK, I relented. I'm pretty tired of those messages too, so I decided to take a look and if it took less than a couple of hours I'd built and posted a new gnustep-base.dll that doesn't try to validate the XML PLISTs.
Get it here. This will be used for any future Win32 installers.
Anyone using 1.65 or the textured planets exe should be able to drop this file into the oolite.app directory under where you installed the game.
It works on my PC and gives me a nice compact stderr.txt
btw: Where does one get your famous planets exe? Does it come at a cost (like not being quite as up to date)? Is there still a clash with oxp'ed planets?

There's a link on the Textured Planets Experiment post under PC-Olite.
It dosent clash with planets / moons added with the AddMoon / AddPlanet command (ie all OXPs except Diso.oxp run fine), but commands that re-set the colours of a Main Planet are no-longer read.

Think it was a tweaked build of Giles's last update, so it is as up-to-date as the normal exe.
Every planet is different!

The screenshots I've seen don't do it any justice. This should definitely be a part of the standard game. Please do the suns too They look like bland pieces of cardboard next to the planets with this thing running. Oolite deserves to look it's best.

I'd love to do the suns, but I'm hopeless at graphics programming. The difficulty with the planet textures was getting the library that generates them linking with the Obj-C, but using the textures it generates was pretty easy. It was a fun hack, but there is a performance hit, and it makes the game really hard to build because of the C++ library.
I've looked at the sun and can't make head or tail of how to generate or use new, better textures. I'd love someone to do a hack that makes the surface a heaving, boiling, grainy mass and added cooler corona textures. But that person isn't me.
Giles was working on generating planet textures in game and I'm sure he would have got results just as good, but then burn-out hit.

Such a shame with Giles. I'm quite sure every ooliteer hopes that he gets better than ever soon. But even if he's already back on his track and close to the top, I suppose that we can't know if he'll want to have very much if anything to do with the development of the game in the future. Perhaps we'll only see him occasionally speaking his mind about the general direction of the game without having to code or advise on coding. I only joined the Ooniverse as he was withdrawing, but it's a nice surprise every time he drops a line on the BB.
I don't know much about programming and hence less about graphics programming. But page 403 in this book might explain enough for someone who wants to have a go at making textured suns. Then there is this pdf actually entitled The SunSaver: An OpenGL Visualization of the Sun's Surface. I have no idea if it could be of any use

Probabley already know this, but as its a replacement exe file, you have to unzip and then drop the new Oolite.exe into the Oolite.app directory. Its only the planetinfo.plist that goes into AddOns. Worked first time for me!

@Dr. Nil
That is a really interesting site. Sorry to say the techie stuff meant nothing to me, but the development images were exciting. I could almost imagine steering the old Python around the base of a solar flare or 'riding the tube' underneath an arc of flame.
Could it be done, though?
Captain Hesperus
"Yeah, solar flares are ever so pretty, up til the point they hit you, flay your shields, irradiate you, your crew and, most importantly, your cargo with lethal doses of radiation, and then dissolve your ship around you. But yeah, they are kinda pretty."
