Just installed this - Giles, you have officially restored my passion for Oolite! that, and your video post in conjunction with ploppy's texturing and HUD - this is amazing.
forced a misjump and there was this huge battle going on, thargoid carrier and behemoths by the score (well 5) and then the thargoid carrier exploded from behemoth plasma fire! obj count up to 795, FR down to 4, and the screen full of white dots.
the explosions were magnificent - full white-out at one point, which i've wanted to see happen for ages - and i just sat there and watched the thing go reeaal slow, with all these explosions and everything.
it was beautiful.

Installation blebs :-(
HI.
as per my other comments in other threads (page 2 of "Another Newbie" in Discussion) : i've got the game up and running, but am seeing very few other ships - even when i jump into an Anarchy i'm lucky to see 2 pirates, and i haven't seen a single Thargoid yet.
so, i re d/l'd installer 1.65, and as per LittleBear's advice i reinstalled it all. and it's exactly the same. before wiping, i noticed a file "STDERR" and it was packed w/ faults : I can c/p the whole thing if you want, but much of it is this type of thing :-
i'm on WIn XP, AMD2300+, 1.5g onboard mem, vid card is an FX5700 128m.
any clues? pleeeeeease help me out, i wanna get into serious Pirate-Tw@ing mode and up my ranking
TIA....

@KW - Killer I've had a look in my Stderr file and its filled much the same as yours, lots of these:
I kept having to Witchfuel inject away and pick off the quicker ones before the pack caught me back up - it was hairy at times.
So, what I don't understand is why I get similar errors in the Stderr file but I get a storm of pirates and you barely get a drizzle.
Similar spec PC too: WinXP SP2, AthlonXP2800+, 768MB, 128MB FX5600
to be honest I think some of these are mac based commands that are being thrown up as erros in the PC version of the game and therefore nothing to worry about but perhaps those more knowledgeable may like to shed some light on the issue?
and some of this:2007-01-08 23:34:41.000 oolite.exe[2932] don't know how to load entity 'http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd' id '-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN'

Yeah Daddy, that's what i get too in the full version of my dump. there must be *something* going wrong tho, in earlier version of ELite pirates were all over my ar$e when going to Anarchies - i used to fill up w/ tempting goods and fly to the sun and back just to up my kill scores - now, like i say, i've traded down to a Cobra MkI, traded back and forth to work up to C50k to get me a new MkIII, and i've got a grand total of 15 kills :-/ no Thargoids, no sunskimmers, very very few pirates - but go to Ensoreus, and you got SWARMS of vipers, they're all over the damn place.
It's very early days for you yet with only 15 kills, you will be plagued by them.
AFAIK in the basic game pirates are introduced randomly and the numbers vary between political systems, also some OXP's like sunskimmers and pirate coves add extra nasties as well, without there being a specific mission involved.
If you want to meet Thargoids, you need to force a witchspace jump, (hold down the Up arrow key while hyperspacing). The other way to meet them is the Thargoid Plans mission (generic not OXP) you need to be in Galaxy 3 for that and have quite a few more kills.
Good Hunting

Hi KW
Oolite is not player centric like Elite used to be, where ships just appeared out of the blue, in whichever direction you flew. Systems are populated as you enter them, and the ships then go about according to their AIs, flying around and fighting each others. Therefore most ships are generated in the spacelanes (between witchpoint buoy and station) in order to give you any chances of coming across them at all in the vast distances of space.
You're unlikely to encounter very much activity if you play the basic game and fly outside the spacelanes. Try to add some OXPs and things will change.
Eg. THIS OXP (which is smaller than 1k) adds the risk of encountering other ships, when flying from the witchpoint buoy to the sun.

Okay, cheers for the replies everyone. perhaps i'm just fretting :-/
i remember on Elite for the Beeb/Amiga that ships would be all over and the Thargoids would turn up in normals space too. having traded fairly well w/out much contest i was feelin that mebbes my good fortune was underserved after the way i had to fight for it all on the original games. if this is the way the Oolite universe is tho, i'll accept it and shed my guilt trip
i'll bear w/ it, if i still seem to be alone out there i'll post again in a few weeks time.

He He, when you start assassins you won't know what hit you, your scanner will look like a snowstorm, the best thing you can do is get the best equipped ship you can in terms of offensive and defensive abilities, plus the cloaking device and be prepared to replace the "i" key and "a" key on your keybord when they wear out!

Sparcely populated? DL Selezen's Eagle II oxp from Oosat 1 and go to Zaonce and/or Tionisla. Every time I go to these systems, there are like fifteen Fugitive Eagles parked around the WP beacon. and at 120Cr bounty each they are twice the profit for the E-bomb I inevitably have to use!Rxke wrote:Maybe you are visiting a very poor anarchy system? Those are quite sparcely populated sometimes.

"It's very early days for you yet with only 15 kills, you will be plagued by them. "
no kidding! kept to the spacelane corridor last night - i'm now average!!
popped into Atriso (i think, combat stress is affecting my memory), blip - python and two sidewinders. oops, dead. Hype in again. python and two Sidewinders. Get them this time, ha! Torus, Python again and three escorts. man, i got my ar$e *kicked*. killed em all but it cost me scoop damage, puter damage, injector damage and jettisoned Alien Items - hit the D key when diving (used the Beeb format keys) - gonna have to get into the key plist and change that one! Torus again, and this time a Python w/ about 5 escorts : didn't stick around to count, Hyped outta there! needless to say, i'll be back to safe trading to get cash for shield boosters.
and is it just me, or do laser heat up faster and cool slower than in the original game? got beams, seemed 90% of the fight i was overheated. we need coolers as an optional extra!
and don't get me started about a ship filling the crosshairs and my laser not hitting it... >:-/
