Trouble finishing missions!
Hi, I've been enjoying this wonderful game and reliving my childhood (played Elite on C64 tape in 1986 first time). Kudos and thanks to all developers!
However, I am having trouble completing a couple of the oxz missions. They go swimmingly for a while then I seem to hit a wall and end up flying through empty space round and round looking for something that I swear isn't there. Very frustrating!
Examples:
> To Catch a Thargoid: collected all Intel, went to secret installation - promised invasion didn't come. Tried flying back and forth to witchpoint (a very long way), tried just waiting, tried docking and launching. Nothing.
> Trident Down: followed several options (due to seeming dead ends) and had to reload many slots back to try again.
* I did locate Delaney in one thread (ambush) and used the "device" - but it just circled him for a while then burned out! Tried reloading many times but could never find him again.
* followed a different thread (tell the press), tried to locate ATU fleet... looked everywhere! Must of travelled several light years round and round one system to no avail. I started thinking... surely the fleet can't be this far away!
I don't want the missions to be easy, but I can't tell if I'm doing something wrong, or the code is - I don't know enough about reading save files. Can anyone help out, please?

Glad you're enjoying the game! Could be those missions are broken in the latest Oolite, but I'm no expert when it comes to OXPs.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Re: Trouble finishing missions!
Looking at the BB Threads, Trident Down worked with v.1.80 in July 2014, and again in March 2015 . But v.1.82 which came out in May 2015 also featured major game code changes, affecting AI and other matters. My febrile understanding is that the changes since then have basically improved the display of planets, ships etc, rather than impacting on game play.CyanWisp wrote: ↑Thu Sep 30, 2021 7:14 pmHi, I've been enjoying this wonderful game and reliving my childhood (played Elite on C64 tape in 1986 first time). Maybe try it out with older versions of the relevant oxp's and version 1.80?
TCAT however seems to have been broken with v.1.80. Again, maybe try it with Oolite v.1.771?
Older versions available from here: http://wiki.alioth.net/index.php/Oolite - and elsewhere!
Otherwise, maybe another_commander or one of our other developers could help?

Re: Trouble finishing missions!
Different versions of Oolite will work happily alongside each other, btw. You could even make a copy of your save-file, drop it into one of the older versions, and it may well work. If not, nothing lost but knowledge gained. A save-file from an older version should definitely work in a later version.

Wow, thanks for the replies. I shall give an older version a spin. Happy piloting!
Re: Trouble finishing missions!
Replying to myself! You get that on long journeys in space, I suppose.
I have had some (almost immediate) success with Trident Down. I was looking for something like a ship ID that would make me sure of what I was doing; the answer wasn't quite as literal, but was just as obvious. My bad. I wondered what those mysterious entries on my space compass were!

Talking to yourself is okay - it's when you start talking to inanimate objects that you have a problem!

Re: Trouble finishing missions!
There's a Syrian liturgy which includes a prayer that one not be reincarnated as an inanimate object! Why can't I talk to my teapot if that is my great-grandfather's current incarnation?

Surely one cannot be incarnated as an inanimate object? Oh, hang on, the coffee pot wants a word!

Trident Down is working but TCAT is broken... am I correct?
