Ok, ta for the replies - i thought i was being a complete mook there for a mo : i've noticed (after, y'know, *paying attention* instead of just flitting about in a happy nostalgic daze) that when you reach the planet the compass changes to point at the station - but you don't get the "S" until you're waaaaaay nearer to it, so i'm guessing the first couple times to Zaonce i just happened to approach the planet real close to the station, leading me to believe it was the same as Elite. hmm!
i was worrying i'd made a fool of meself ("they let HIM have a ship w/ guns?!?") on the board, but it appears that it mighta been a legit bleb the first couple times ~ i'll have to keep an eye on that!

so anyways, after managing to dock a couple times (ooh - Wolf's Instant Karma #1 ~ I was nervously crawling into Zaonce's docking slot and this Viper comes blithely sweeping past me almost scraping my paint. i was like, "How man, wait ya turn!!" >:-( ...and he stuffs it and explodes. i was like "haaaa, that'll teach you!" .....and proceeded to do the exact same thing meself. :-/ ) i was tempted by the 2nd hand market, and have traded my Cobra for a Mk1 w/ front Military Lasers, Docking puters and a fuel scoop w/ a wad of cash left over. gonna go get me a few kills tonight i think. keep thinking i should be "paying my dues" by working for the cash for the equipment, but hey, i did it all on the Electron, the BBC and th Amiga, so i think i'm fully paid up and deserving of a shortcut!

 Ah the joy of manual docking!

I have to say with a nice analogue gamepad and the nav. buoy outside the station actually showing where to fly to in space (rather than having to imagine it - like I did my my C64 days) docking has actually been pretty easy - having said that I cocked up real bad the first time I tried to dock with a Rock Hermit and that doesn't even spin!

Having introduced three friends from work to Oolite they all traded "down" to fully equipped CMkI's - I'm still plodding with my CMkIII but I'm spending more time on the BBs than I am on the game - I just want to have not missed anything when I finally throw myself into it!

Oh and one last thing - on one occassion the station was on the far side of the planet as I approached - only when my altitude turned red did I realise that I might need a "Lost in Space - the movie" moment to actually dock on my original trajectory - I had to haul the ship straight up - fuel inject away and over before I finally saw that glistening spinning blob off in the distance...

@ Capt. I forgot to ask - what is an Ixain Battle Cruiser - what OXP does it appear in.

Also, this kind of story is just the kind of "exclusive" I'd like to report on in my forthcoming Snoopes.oxp - do you mind if I steal it? Feel free to give your own account of how you were nothing to do with the incident and your presence in the system was purely coincidental - obviously the snoopes editorial team may chose to ignore such "facts" for the benefit of a "good story" and "reader interest".

Ixian Battle Cruiser --> Ixian omnibus. But that doesn't exist anymore I guess, so you'd have to look @ Oosat1 ixianships.oxp

Big, big ship, but pitches waaay too fast to be realistic.

True, but the Fugitive Battle Cruiser yields 5000-10000Cr in bounty, well worth the time to overheat your mili-lasers (twice) and keep tapping the ECM (these things have like a gazillion standard missiles).

@DaddyHoggy
"Today the planet of Ensoreus is observing a day of official mourning after the Coriolis Space Station 'Ensoreus III' was lost with 8,000 GalCop personnel and 25,000 inhabitants and visitors. The incident was reportedly caused by a collision between the station and an as-yet unnamed Ixian Star Navy capital ship. The vessel was utterly destroyed and the station was catapulted into Ensoreus' star. The death toll would have been higher, since the station's capacity was 12,000 GalCop and 100,000 inhabitants, but the swift and courageous actions by police, Navy and trader ship captains in evacuating as many people as possible up to the very last moment prevented the loss of all life aboard the station. A GalCop official stated: 'There is no cause for alarm, this was a regretable and unfortunate incident, with no ill intentions simply pilot error'. An unconfirmed source told us that the incident would not have been so bad had the station's thruster systems not failed at the time of impact. Had they fired effectively, the station would have been saved. This is yet another blow to the reliability of the aging Coriolis class station as the out-dated stations are crawling towards retirement. DraCorp has already tendered and had confirmed the offer to replace the station with one of their more reliable 'TransHab' class stations, already dubbed Ensoreus IV. More on this story as it develops."

It is still too weak for such a bounty so i tweaked mine a bit (and pitch was damn unrealisitc)
i gave him pitch and roll 0.5 and 10 missiles - that probably means a couple of those will be hardened. And 3000 energy. I'd like to add some plasma cannons too.

Couldn't the cruiser be fixed so it doesn't appear as a ship that would try to dock or which the game could call up, when calling for a ship to leave station.

Btw the docking cruiser has been captured before:

@Capt - Much appreciated - you will be (dis)credited accordingly!

@ Doc - When people said they were big - didn't quite appreciate the size of the adjective in use! Jeez!

"gonna go get me a few kills tonight i think. "

Pff!
hyped into Riiorte, anarchy, Torused towards the planet....nowt. refuelled, hoofed off to a nearby anarchy, Torus...buncha ships appeared. "get in, it's on!"....nope, Boa w/ an escort. tch.
back to Riorte, pirates, yay! incoming missile - hit E, discover i've not got an ECM. oops, dead. tch. switched off in disgust.

oh, BTW - sunskimming. didn't work. i did the old Elite stuff, skim up, line up on the horizon, watch the temp gauge rise, but my scoops just didn't kick in as usual when you get to about 75% along the scale, i held off a bit longer and eventually exploded. what's up w/ that then? do i need these heatshield things?? just checked the wiki entry and it looks like i don't so i dunno why i didn't start scooping, any ideas?

Hah! I've got a doozy for you! Bought a rusty Python at knock-down price (it came with FS, WFI, LCB and ECM) filled up with computers and machinery and hyped to the closest Poor Agri/Anarchy. Then I take a look for the first time at the gun sights. They look like the ones you get on views that don't have a gun mounting. I hit the fire button. Nada. I panic. The closest system is just beyond my fuel range and I'm still by the Witchpoint Beacon. Then three blips appear, turn red and come in hot. I'm thinking 'Crap. Game Over, Press Space Bar.' when in jumps a BEHEMOTH (Loki). A quick flurry of plasma and Navy Asp death later, I'm docking and using the residual cash from buying this luckless lemon of a ship to buy a sturdy Beam Laser.

It depends on the size of the sun. Some suns you don't need to go too close before that precious fuel scoop starts up, but others i've had to be in the red on the altimeter before the scoop kicks in. That makes you panic I can tell you. My tactic if I intend to sunskim (which is almost everytime I leave a station) is to keep at least 0.6ly of fuel in the tank and use the Injectors to get in close quickly.

You don't need a military laser either ;)

Skimming with heat shields and fuel injectors is very easy.

It's all in the altitude. Cabin Temp only tells you that your Lobstoid co-pilot has gone from a healthy grey-black to violent thermadore pink.
I never sunskim without enough fuel to either get in scoop range or get me back to near the limit of mass lock on the way out.

problems

Post by Killer Wolf »

Reet, back again, thoroughly p155ed off.

firstly,, got to sunskim - had to install heat shields tho.

secondly - my game's been vanishing. just closes the window, no warning message or nowt, very VERY annoying. my puter is a but unstable sometimes, so i took a look in the admin event logs...and there are THOUSANDS of oolite entries, i swear, they all look like :-

WTF is all that about? has my install gone belly up or is my whole system just in need of a good slap?

oh, and whoever programed this "too close to spacestaion" thing that aborts your jump.....annoying. reallyreallyreallyreallyreally annoying.
