The JS runtime is running out of memory. This is because there are too many scripts running and it overflows the default 32MiB allocated for them.

You can increase the size of the JS runtime allocated memory though. You will have to edit your preferences file and add this:

"jsruntime-size-mib" = 64;
This allocates 64MiB for scripts. If this is still not enough (which it should be), you can increase it further by changing the 64 to whatever you prefer, as long as you have enough free memory.

As for where the preferences file resides on a Mac and how to edit it, I really don't know.

For further reference, from Wiki:

As C_X says, you have 8GB of RAM - more than enough to run Oolite ordinarily. My install, admittedly lean, uses about 1GB of memory. However, if you're overflowing the JS thingy, and the above cure is too technical, as I suspect, you could try reducing the number of OXPs you're running. I presume you have hundreds of them, yes? Do you really need them all?

Well, gentlemen ...

I eventually tracked down the preferences file and could understand very little of it - gibberish. The bits in English seemed wrong. So I just hoicked it out of the folder and restarted the game. It ran, and generated a new preferences file. I left the Coriolis at Ororqu (en route for Xexedi) for the fourth time, hit the Witchdrive actuation button - and it worked! I managed to crawl out of the other end of the witchspace tunnel, and get over to Esveor - and then hop over to Xeoner.

Thank you for this. I reread it in the light of (i) Hiran's patient coaching during our Oolite Communicator sessions and (ii) Phkb's injunction last week, and not only did it make sense, but I was able to implement it. Now about to try it!

There would be no initial entry since it has a default of 32 mib. You can type it in yourself or cut and paste it from here.

As Nite Owl noticed, unless you run a "defaults" GNUStep command, that entry will not be there, and will be initialized to its 32M default value.
For Linux, you can either run the "defaults" command, or just manually add it to your oolite.plist in the same folder.

A warning, though, I would strongly recommend to backup the file you plan to manually modify (be it .GNUstepDefaults or oolite.plist).
And considering Nite Owl's recommendation, you can only do that if the file you plan to change is _not_ in XML format.
