Smallest planet

Post by Cody »

With a radius of just 2820 km, is Ereddive the smallest planet in the Eight?
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Another question: I know which system has the second-longest WP/station run (Ontilain), but which system has the longest?

This question needs some math. There is planet_distance parameter (distance from WP to planet centre) and station_vector parameter (station position relative to planet) in planetinfo.plist. So you need to calculate WP-station side of triangle.

Top five systems sorted from longest planet_distance:
Aatenbe (1 63)
Onenceve (4 121)
Arazaes (0 92)
Aesarge (6 138)
Ontilain (6 36)

All of which are large planets. Is the largest planet in the Eight among them? Aatenbe, perhaps?

<grins> And on a small planet such as Ereddive, the surface gravity would be what - 0.2 standard? Something like that?

I blame lockdown!

In first approximation surface gravity is in linear proportion with planet radius. (M ~ R^3, g ~ M * R^-2, -> g ~ R).
So 2820/6378 = 0.442 g.
In reality large planets tended to be more compressed, having more density and more mass. Mars for example has 3397 km radius (3397/6378 = 0.5325 R♁), but due to lower density has only 1/10 of Earth mass and surface gravity only 0.38 g. Extrapolating this tendency planet with 2820 radius will have only 0.32 g or so.

UPD. Planet density is also depends on location. More distance from sun -> more volatiles in protoplanetary nebula -> more ices and less rocks in planet composition -> less density.
