Which tool for tweaking OXZ files for iMac?

Post by RGVV »

Good day,

With which tool can I open and save OXZ files to make some little tweaks?

When I try to open one I can open it with a ZIP program. When I do so it unzips in several folders which I can edit with a text editor, however, how can I get the package back together as OXZ file without Oolite crashing when it tries to digest it?

Thanks!

Best regards,

Robert.

Rezip the folders, keeping the original package name, then change the .zip suffix to .oxz - that should do it.

If you find it doesn't work (it didn't for me), then just rename it as an .oxp (not .oxz) and bung it in your AddOns folder which sits beside the OXZ's ManagedAddOns folder.

You will find that when the Expansions Manager is working again, that the new .oxp is shown in red. This is very helpful. It is too easy to mix the tweaked with the untweaked.

By the way, have you managed to get the Expansions Manager to unzip the OXZs for you?

OXZs will work happily in the AddOns folder - or have I misunderstood?

They will, but if you want to fiddle with them:-

Go to the Expansion Pack Manager in Game.

Select List OXPS.

It will now show you the list of OXPs you have installed as OXZ files.

Highlight the one you want to fiddle with and press X.

Oolite will then extrat the OZX to a folder in AddOns.

The folder will end .off

Change this to .oxp.

Oolite will now ingorne the orginal version and will run with the OXP version in Add Ons and any changes you make to it.

If you make a mess of it, deleting the .oxp version will cause Oolite to go back to using the OXZ version.

To edit I'd recommend Edit Pad Lite 8. It's free, won't mess up the file format and is colour coded so will highlight code typos.

EG. If you have missed a , or a " in a text string it will show as white rather than yellow, so you can quickly see the mistake. ;-)

Been a bit of a blessing when I've been C&Ping long lists of procedurally generated text from my latested log to my array file.
OXPS : The Assassins Guild, Asteroid Storm, The Bank of the Black Monks, Random Hits, The Galactic Almanac, Renegade Pirates can be downloaded from the Elite Wiki here.

You are wonderful, Thank You!! I've seen no instructions for this anywhere! If Maik/Winston ever resuscitate our wiki (or if Redspear manages the correct imprecations), I'll stick up something there.

By the way, is there a list anywhere of what the colours in the Expansions Manager indicate?

I have so far encountered the following varieties:

White: An expansions pack one has installed (which is up-to-date)
Yellow: An expansions pack one does not have installed
Orange: An expansion which either (i) requires one or more expansions to work, or (ii) conflicts with another installed.
Red: An expansion which is in the AddOns folder instead - possibly modified (guess based on observed behaviour)
Brown: ?
Light Blue: An update for an older installed expansions pack
Dark Blue: ?
Grey: ?

Is there a green?

Here is the rundown of what the colors in the OXZ Manager mean:

Yellow: Ready to download and install.
Cyan: Installed; updated pack available for download.
Orange: Ready to download, but Oolite will also download extra packs to make it work.
Brown: Conflicts with an already installed pack.
White: Installed and at the current version.
Red: Manually installed; cannot also be installed automatically.
Gray: Incompatible with this version of Oolite.
Blue: Installed but no longer available for download.

We have nothing assigned to green yet.

Great! Thank you. So we have the instructions for using the EM on the first page of it, the colours and the instructions for extraction.

Is there anything else to go on an EM page on the wiki when I can muck about with it again?

Please note, the question of essential/recommended packages has been circulating the board for a very long time and the answer is always the same, there are no essential/recommended packages. Hence, green is for essential packages, since the color is not in use.

Interesting. This topic has very little to do with the colours used in the expansion pack manager. Maybe better to start a separate discussion about that instead of hijacking this thread.

Doesn't the Mac Notebook work all right? What is the advantage of Textastic? And have you yet managed to rezip any of your tweaked OXZ's?
