Default or Griff textures

Post by Damocles Edge »

Whilst looking through my installed oxp's I noted that the whilst some ships use their own textures the vast bulk use the Griff bundle to replace default ship textures with Griff textures (this seemed to be the perceived wisdom when I fist installed Oolite some years ago).
Now I am looking and thinking that some of the textures in that bundle are 4-5 years old and I am asking has there been any advancement / development of the default game textures that may change the decision I made when originally installing Oolite?
Can I ask people what textures people are using for the standard ship library and any comments on how people feel they work or recommendations for alternatives.
This is for your standard Oolite ships only.

Many thanks

I'm still using Griff's textures. The default textures lack his shaders.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

Well, one thing to keep in mind is that since v1.88 there is a new ligthing model, as well as a new shaders set for all the default ships. Griff's ships, amazing as they are, come with their own set of shaders, which do not use the new lighting model. Because of this, for my current default ship set I use the standard ships that come with the game package and have copied most normal maps from Griff's set over. A few edits in the shipdata.plist and voila, Griff's ships with the new shaders and they look really good. The default game ship set consists of Griff's models with textures by Capt. Solo, so most of the normal maps from Griff's packages are compatible. I do lose the decals doing this, but I don't care, it's a small price to pay (and adding the decals is just a matter of fiddling with the new shaders a bit, but I am a bit busy these days to tackle that).

<nods> The new lighting model is good, but I'm afraid my tinkering days are over.
And I'd not want my late-model Cobra to be the only ship out there with decals.

I always was wondering why the default-ships lack normal maps, most of Griffs maps could be used and gsagostinhos additions include them as well. In my personal opinion, they just are looking too polished.
Scars remind us where we've been. They don't have to dictate where we're going.

Decided to give the default textures a try - I have to say that I like them, although I am trying to get early 90's music out of my head now

Upon first play and to echo a previous comment it does feel a little bit Disney when compared to Griff's shaders but I will stick with it and come to a conclusion when I have a good amount of time using the default shaders (if nothing else it has helped to reduce my oxp clutter).

What a ghastly song and video! I need an alternative Shiny to erase the memory!

You got me shocked: who is Andy Warhol and why does he sound like Lou Reed? ... until I noticed "The Velvet Underground" below.
