Editing oxp files???

Post by elite-player »

I like to edit some oxp's. Not so much the actual coding, but just the odd bit of wording that appears on screen. Some oxp's I can edit without any problem and after restarting the game (with shift pressed) the oxp still works OK.
However, sometimes even the smallest change in an oxp file will cause the whole thing to not work or even be recognised by the game.
For example... in the Explorers club oxp I wanted to change something (in bold) in the missiontext.plist file:

"explorers_club_rank_string" = "Systems visited: current chart — [explorers_club_rank_chart], universe — [explorers_club_rank_total]. Rank: [explorers_club_rank_player].";

to

"explorers_club_rank_string" = "Systems visited: Current Sector — [explorers_club_rank_chart], Galaxy — [explorers_club_rank_total]. Rank: [explorers_club_rank_player].";

As you can see I haven't touched any coding itself, only the word/s that appear onscreen.

When I made this change, my log file showed this:

16:46:12.811 [plist.parse.failed]: Failed to parse ../AddOns/Explorers_Club_1.4.4.oxp/Config/missiontext.plist as a property list.
Parse failed at line 1 (char 1) - extra data after parsed string

Does anyone have any idea why I can edit some oxp's, but not others?

Thanks very much.

The above changes seem to work fine here, with no errors reported. Which OS (and which text editor) are you using?

I'm using Windows 10 and NotePad.

Like I said, it only seems to be certain oxp's that won't allow me to edit their files and then they always come up with the same error in the log file.

There was also a time when I COULD edit a game save file, then play with it fine. But now if I edit one, it won't show up in the game.
Very strange.

I'd recommend Notepad++ rather than Notepad - try that.

Notepad has a long history of screwing with Oolite files! If you're going to tinker, avoid it.

Notepad++ seems to work.

So I can only assume that Notepad must be adding something to certain files which the game does not like.

Thank you.

Yep! I'm sure I read they'd improved Notepad for WX, but it's still up to its old tricks.
