Pitch Black, The Sheep Look Up, Deathworld and of course Dune - all good answers! Spud42 carried it over the line so the shoe is now on his foot …

Gregory Benford's Galactic Centre Saga:

In the Ocean of Night, Across the Sea of Suns, Great Sky River, Tides of LIght, Furious Gulf, Sailing Bright Eternity
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

Charles Stross - I'd recommend the Laundry series but that's Lovecraftian horror with spy and SF tropes rather than true SF, so let's go for the Merchant Princes series, which is SF initially disguised as fantasy:

The Family Trade (2004)
The Hidden Family (2005)
The Clan Corporate (2006)
The Merchants' War (2007)
The Revolution Business (2009)
The Trade of Queens (2010)
Empire Games (2017)
Dark State (2018)
Invisible Sun (forthcoming, 24 Mar. 2020)

How about some military sci-fi, spud? Hammer's Slammers, for example. Or the Honor Harrington series, perhaps?

Mr Disembodied has a great choice with Amtrak Wars... read it at least twice..
Then Sn Cody takes the boots with either of his choices. Honor Harrington series is a beauty. loved the detail in the space navy battles.
will have to look into hammers slammers, after looking at that wiki reference it sounds familiar?? might have read one or two already.
Late to the party is Commander_X with the Valor series by Tanya Huff.

looks like once i get through the Harry Harrison collection i have some more fun books to find and read.

ok take it away Cody..

Okay, an easy one: which novel links Led Zeppelin to one of the great sci-fi authors?

Now if it was Bowie or Pink Floyd I'd have easy answers, but no idea for Led Zeppelin.

Strangely enough, there is a Pink Floyd connection!
