Re: Science Fiction Trivia
OK: five examples, from books, TV, film etc., of spaceships which actually look like classic flying saucers, i.e. flattened, circular objects, ideally with a minimum of fuss going on around the edges or on the top or bottom. As an illustration, I'll say that the spaceship from the end of Close Encounters of the Third Kind would NOT fit the bill: too many bells, whistles, organ stops, prongs, blocks and the like.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (the 1951 original)?
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
How about The Flipside of Dominick Hide (a quirky TV play from 1980 which I remember fondly)?

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
I don't think I can allow Dominick's vehicle … it's the right shape, but it's a time machine, not (as far as I can remember) a spaceship.

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
<chortles> An interesting distinction, which I hadn't considered - and you're probably correct.
Still four to go!

The Dalek ship from Daleks: Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.
Looks like something the Thargoids might have built...
and of course Mars Attacks

Daleks (even more so, in the new series), Mars Attacks, and Gerry Anderson's UFO all fit the bill … one more to take it!

Arthur Dent: I always said there was something fundamentally wrong with the universe.

Re: Science Fiction Trivia
Star Trek has used various methods, from going really fast (like, even faster than faster than light, or something) in a slingshot orbit around a star, to jumping through a big stone doughnut (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and "The City on the Edge of Forever", respectively).
Re: Science Fiction Trivia
How about "Timeslip"? It involved crawling through something called (I just had to look this up to check the terminology) a "time barrier". The protagonists would end up somewhere in the past or future.
Timeslip was a UK TV series in the early 70s. Not sure whether it ever made it beyond our shores.
Cheers

Do time-travelling wizards count? Catweazle travelled forward in time via total immersion in water.
