Perry Rhodan - it would have been my guess anyway since my knowledge of German SF is virtually non-existent, but I happened to know the series started in 1961. I have no idea of any context beyond that.

Let's go with another five things thingy... five books, films, comics or whatever in which the universe as experienced by the characters is in some way a fake. Only one for each source, e.g. if there is a book that has been made into a film and a comic only one can be used. The more extreme the fake the better!

Number of the Beast Robert Heinlein. where books the characters have read turn out to be actual worlds they visit and meet the characters from the books... ie. Alice in wonderland where Glenda the good witch addsa magical bathroom to the spaceship/car....

The Truman Show - I think it counts, some of the technology was well ahead of its time.
The Matrix - Definitely, an exemplar for this class of story
Number of the beast - Sorry, I don't think it really counts, the universe the characters experience is real except that there is more than one and some fictional worlds turn out to be real.
The Island - if this is the 2005 film then yes, it qualifies

Didn't the crew of Red Dwarf discover they'd actually been in a simulation for four years? Does that count?
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

The Citizens in Greg Egan's Diaspora are living in a simulation … although this may not count as "fake" because they're aware that they are in a simulation, with the real objective universe outside.
