What are the 'old' commanders doing nowadays ?

Post by pagroove »

Here to say Hi, :D

Just checking in after a long 'lurking' period. I hope you are all allright.

Nowadays I still play Oolite but only a lot less. But when playing I am having a bast.

I am giving almost all my time in the Trainz forums making a Japan route (see Trainz screenshots/Japan and then my name pagroove) that I started 8 years ago. The route is constantly growing and even made me go to Japan. I went to Japan with my brother last april and we visited Tokyo, Takayama, Osaka, Himeji, .Hiroshima, Kagoshima, Fukuoka and drove with a car over the Kyushu Island. Had a wonderful time (with good food too :)).

I am now back and busy with the route again but also playing other games. Like No Mans Sky

Wait No Mans sky  ?
Yes playing No Mans Sky on my new computer has sucked me in. Despite all the negativity this game got I find it very Oolite like with the added bonus that each planet looks fairly unique and I am loving the terrain and vidvid colours of the game. I am thoroughly enjoying the experience and I am loaded for the upcoming update No Mans Sky Next. I am not doing the community thing though. The community is entered around the Reddit pages and I am just lurking there, reading up, reading the wiki but mostly doing my own thing. It is a space game with space combat. In terms of Space combat though and interaction with ships itself Oolite is still King (even over Elite Dangerous IMO). So if I want to have more of a 'simulated' space game experience then I come to Oolite and not go to ED. For the realistic space moments Space Engine is fantastic. So I have my 'needs' covered.

Speaking of ED. I alsmost NEVER play that game so I am thinking of letting it in the status it is in and that is a basic subscription. Reason for me that it is a too big time investment and it doesn't resonate with me somehow. I rather play Oolite because you can play short but interesting sessions.

Third game I am playing like mad is Project Cars 2. That racing game is fantastic!

So that sums it a bit up what I did lately. O yeah and still making music (only for fun though).

What do you guys do nowadays besides Oolite? I am curious. I miss sometimes the early days before the Kickstarters when this forum was busy.

:D :D :D Greetings. Commander Groove signing out..

With the Hello Kitty bullet train? <grins>

Hey, Pag - good to see you!
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

Hi Cody! Luckily you are still here :D

I went with the Shinkansen 500 EVA from Osaka to Himeji before it was repainted in the now Hello Kity Variant.

I rode a lot of types of Bullet trains :D

This is a video I did shot myself (the rest of the material is still to be release on my YT channel )

It's one of KZ's - not quite from his rank badges. I liked those badges!

Hi and good to have you back pagroove. I'm still around, playing Oolite occasionally and writing a line of code or two even less occasionally. Lots of things have changed in the last two years in RL and it's not so easy to dedicate to the project the time I'd like to. Not giving up though!

Hi PAG,
I'm still here, mostly lurking and occasionally posting, but not really that active anymore. RL leaves me very little time for Oolite I'm afraid, but I still manage to do the little bit of maintenance needed on my OXPs.
Good to see you back, and it sounds like you have been busy and having some fun :)

Hi Another Commander. Very good to see you still have the spirit to work on the project. It is worth it IMO.

There is still a place for Oolite these days. Where Oolite shines is that you can play it as casual or hardcore as you like. :). RL certainly has it toll although I must say that it is especially more quiet over here since Elite Dangerous came along. But As you have read this game does not fulfill the role of a new elite for me. For me Oolite is the best Elite.

Strangely the game No Mans Sky is fulfilling the 'commercial game like elite' role for me. I recommend people to check it out if you have a relatively new machine.

For the spacesim experience it is Oolite all the way though.

Hi Smivs.

Good to know you are also here. Don't you miss those busy pre ED Days? The days that everyone was loaded because of 'new space games on the horizon'. Well here we are and most games that we promised haven't come really tru. (cough StarCitizn anyone?)

But good to know that you still maintain the OXP's. Well you know I am reachable if you know it but still happy that Oolite finds new players even today. :D

I think Oolite will always have new players coming in, given the increase in retro-gaming taking place. See http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-06-22/v ... ve/9890362. (The store owners are a little scary, though!)

Ha indeed. Only Oolite is a 'modern' retro game. :D
On retro games. In Osaka I found a whole arcade hall with working games form the 80's also and In Akihabara (Tokyo) retro gaming never went out of mode. But is now mixed in with modern games :).

One of the ten now I read:

Still fly my Gertrude. But do play 'The witcher' and 'Wolfenstein' And 'Oolite 80' The later versions were just not fun to me.
The first Witcher, I kicked ass. The first Wolfenstein back in the early 90's, Kicked ass!
Now I have the later games on disc. So can play any time. Wow, talk about an ass kicking. Hardly getting past 5 mins. Wolfenstein! Ouch. Witcher 2, still trying to figure out the buttons. they were changed from the first game?
Maybe I'm just that wee bit older and i don't spend the same time on a game to the full fun. Oolite was a 64K wire frame game when I started.
Back to Oolite.. Tad more than 6GigB of stuff. That is Bytes not bits.

I mean.. Really. Not being able to dock at max speed with screechies and bangs if you were just that bit off? Not to mention the "Press Space Commander" for being just that bit too much off.

Serious took over fun. Game is not worth playing anymore.
LOOK OUT!!!
OOPS..
"Press Space" Commander
If you do not see "Press Space" more often than you want.. Your not trying!

I still play Oolite Probably more so than ever , since becoming a Widower in February this year, I have and continue to grow old disgracefully with Oolite . If Money was not an object, I'd be buiried in a physical representation of my Cobra Mk III "Saint or Sinner" A Derelict floating in the outer reaches of the Inera System in Galaxy One. :)
