Hi All,
I've finally had a chance to play a bit of Oolite again and have upgraded to v1.86. I'm running Devuan Linux with an Nvidia GTX 960 graphics card and the latest Nvidia 390.42 driver.
I've noticed that ships and especially space stations can be almost invisible with v1.86 (vs v1.84) and I'm wondering if this change is deliberate, a config issue on my side or a bug.
Here is a screenshot from v1.84: https://imagebin.ca/v/3wCbkT3WUYSi
OK, it's dark but it's definitely visible.
Here is the same space station, same commander, etc. from v1.86. All I did was quit, install v1.86, load the commander and exit the station again.

This one is almost invisible apart from the tiny pinpricks of light that I assume are meant to represent windows or other point light sources on the station.
If I didn't have the Telescope OXP installed, the space stations would be pretty much invisible from a distance.
Anyone have any clues?
Thanks in advance.

It could be this (from the 1.86 changelog):
Default ambient light level is now set to 0.25 for all core systems
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

Hi Cody,
Thanks for the quick answer. That would make sense - I saw the change log but hadn't appreciated its implication for things that weren't planets...
I've done some digging and found the planetinfo.plist file in /opt/Oolite/oolite.app/Resources/Config.
Now everything is back as it was... i.e. I can see it.
For all you "realists", it definitely made the shadows blacker in space. For me, however, I'll put it back to 1.00 so that I can see things again!

Code: Select all
cd /opt/Oolite/oolite.app/Resources/Config
sudo cp planetinfo.plist planetinfo.plist.orig
sudo sed -i 's/ambient_level = 0.25/ambient_level = 1.00/g;' planetinfo.plist

Cool - glad you got it reverted.

You could also try the Gamma Settings under the Game Options menu. Moved mine up a few points and have no trouble seeing stuff.

On the other hand, if you have the star in your back while looking at objects, less ambient light makes them (e.g. hermits) stand out.
The station from your screenshot is apparently completely in the planet's shadow.
