Jobs

Post by Captain Vrungel »

I was trading, then an idea came into my mind.
Why you can make money only in space?
I mean, in Drew's Oolite Saga, people do different jobs.
Maybe someone can make a OXP for this?
Like Life in Frontier, or something?
So, will this happen,or not?
Truth is, we don't know.

You mean getting a job in a bar and having to sit and watch the dock screen for 8 hours each day while you "work"?

Or you mean something like being offered a job as a reporter and having to visit interesting systems and somehow write up reports, take pictures etc?

I'm not sure it's something that needs a vote, but as Cmdr James indicated, as long as the task is actually fun, then there should be lots of non-piloting things to do that could be added to the game.

Some players focus on trade, some others on fights but I think the least common denominator is that everyone wants to see stars, planets and ships.

I think there's room for low-pay, repeatable jobs within a system, like mining or in-system taxi, but perhaps more reliable (in the sense that they are often available, or even become available randomly as time passes) and with little requirements (because mining and taxi require some cargo space, which you don't have on ships like the Adder). I think there's some value in spending time in one system because you see it live, especially feature-rich systems (extra planets, constores, DSP, SC, liners, black monks etc.). Typically players just zoom from WP to the main station, which doesn't give the system enough time to evolve.

Generally speaking, the first step in any new OXP is for the person who had the idea to brainstorm it (with or without the input of others) into something that seems viable.

So, to begin with, let's throw the onus back on you.. what "jobs" do you think would be interesting enough that you yourself might be interested in playing them? After all, if you can't see yourself doing it, it's unlikely anyone else will find it an attractive proposition.

And only after that brainstorming process has at least gained some legs, will anyone be likely to attempt to OXP it. Even if the idea is viable/interesting, it will only get off the ground if someone has the time and inclination to take it on. And I'm including you in the group "someone".. it may be that you'll need to learn some new skills and code it yourself, even if others think it's a good idea. Time is a limited resource for all of us. But don't let that discourage you.. every OXP author had to start somewhere.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied
