This was a question in Open Source Games on Reddit
I must say my answer was more than vague because I didn't play much games in that specific genre because I prefer more "technical" games.
If this person were to wander it and ask how can I convert Oolite into an 3D shoot'em'up, what would your answer?
Looking for an arcady FPS Space Shooter

Oolite is "too realistic" … hmm. How about the Oolite training simulator?

Maybe jump to Riedquat and wait two minutes?
JThe main thing is that unless there is a purpose to a game, it can end up being boring really quickly. Just shooting stuff non-stop and without objective can get old fast, but maybe something like Combat Arena OXP could offer what that person needs, at least for a short time and combined with other eye-candy installed as well.
A long time ago there was this To Catch a Thargoid mission pack by Thargoid. I remember it was pretty awesome back in the day. Not sure how it holds up graphically nowadays, but it was a really interesting military mission set of the type that we don't see very often in Oolite.
But when all is said and done, maybe something like Freespace2 SCP would cover such a request in a more complete manner. The guy is right that Oolite is not arcadey.

Re: Looking for an arcady FPS Space Shooter
Am I reading this right?
Realistic?
Shootemup, I can agree. Shoot a station, try to survive.
Back to realistic. I fly Gerty, modied with progging help of fellow Ooliters. Faster but slower to turn, Guns in the whazoo auto targeting (really bad at flying from hind sight.)
Realistic? I can stop and turn instantly, inertia does not exist in the Oonivese.
Die Newtonian fun killer, die. Evil laugh should be inserted here.
If you want reality in your gaming, might I suggest, pay for a game that you will for ever pay for upgrades.
Not one written by writers for theirs and anyone that wish to play fun.
As for a first person shooter space game, try Elite and it's growths. They will be happy to take your money.
Oolite grew from Elite. Just didn't take the Commercial road. And became heaps more versatile for it.
In Oolite you can have Oober anything. Just ask which code to change. The game is yours to play anyway you want.
As for reality,
I prefer to see "Press Space" Even better, manage to get to a safe repair system. Not as easy as said. No 2 situations are ever the same.
After a tense battle. Joystick makers love me.
But not too often.
