Hi... a small issue with save games
Hello all
I got started on an ancient Everex 386 with the PC version of Elite many years ago.
Now found and been playing Oolite for a few months now...
out of the blue on restarting the system after a power failure, all my savegames disappeared from the "Load Commander" screen.
However, the physical files are still present in the Oolite savegame folder. What should I try/do to make them visible?
(My UPS backup is short, about 10min, and went off while I was in the game).
System config in brief: Win7, 64bit SP1 (fully patched/updated)
Intel i5-3450
8GB RAM (G.Skill Ripjaws)
Intel DH61WW mobo

Hi and welcome. You have two options for getting back your savegames list:
- Navigate to the folder where the saves are using the in-game interface in the Load Commander screen (Ctrl+Enter gets inside a folder) or
- Using Wordpad or any editor you may prefer (but NOT Notepad), open the .GNUstepDefaults file found inside
<OoliteInstallFolder>\oolite.app\GNUstep\Defaults and find the line that starts with "save-directory". It should look like this:
Adjust the path so that it points to your savegames location and save the file. Restart the game and you should be able to see your saves. If you follow this solution, you may want to backup .GNUstepDefaults before you start editing, just to be safe in case of any errors.

It is pointing to the correct folder only, in my case "save-directory" = "I:\\games/OOlite/oolite.app/oolite-saves";
I get a full black screen with only the heading "Select Commander" and no list. The message showing press Ctrl-Enter to navigate isn't showing, nor is the prompt ".." for the parent dir. I guess I'll have to start from scratch

If your savegames are still there, back them up before you start again. I think that one or more of them might be corrupted and the game gets an exception (which would explain the blank Load Conmander screen). Can you post the file Latest.log, found inside the game's Logs folder?

The log file is a bit large, but here goes....
P.S. I started a new Jameson, bought a few stuff and tried exiting the game, and loading again. No dice - even the new Jameson is vanished

Did you change anything in the datafiles recently? Any key configuration changes or similar? A re-install of the game may be able to fix it, if the problem is related to core datafiles.

Before reinstalling, try running the game with the Shift held down until you see the Cobra rotating. I think this may be a cache problem related to the suden shutdown your system suffered.

It was the save game file as you rightly said. I deleted my latest save game file (1 no). and all the others came back ok. My preferred backup system is to link my gamesaves folder into my dropbox account. That way, I always have a backup in the cloud. Even if my house was to burn down (as came way-too-close-to-happening almost a year back!), my saves are safe.
