What I tend to do is... as soon as I get the scoop active message, I slow right down and then gradually turn away from the star until I have my back to it.

Although slowing down means you don't scoop fuel as quickly, so you spend more time heating up.

Belly-surfing the sun - that's how I do it. Soon as it starts tanking, I put the crosshairs on the rim.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

I know I am late ....... but I just started playing Oolite (after playing Elite in the C64 and and old PC many, many years ago)
I had also trouble scooping fuel but what seems to make the difference is a full cargo bay.
If your cargo bay is full --> YOU CANNOT SCOOP FUEL
With room in my cargo bay, scooping is never a real problem.
