Credits For Nothing (and y'r Ships 'r Free)

Post by SteveKing »

To all the listeners out there in the Ooniverse, this is Lave's favourite sub-aether comms station "Jameson2084.004"

I've had a request, so I've dipped into the vault this week and pulled out a classic rework from that old terran outfit - Dire Straits. If it's not in your top 100 digital selection for that long haul in from the witch-point beacon, then you've been living in a rock hermit closet for too long.

So sit back and enjoy the ride, keep the Tharg's off your windscreen and your Trumbles out of your comms cabinet.

This is the Milky Way Kid on the late shift sounding out to all the space-lane community :D

I want my, I want my Gal Na-vy
I want my, I want my Gal Na-vy

Now look at them yo-yo's that's the way you do it
Fly a Navy Courier though the Ooni-V
That ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Credits for nothing and your ships for free
Now that ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Let me say them Navy guys ain't dumb
Maybe get a blister on your trigger finger
Blasting Thargs’n’Pirates all to kingdom come

We got to Oo-Haul radioactives, IT systems ‘n luxurie-e-s
We got to move these ship astrogators. We got to move these holovid scree-eens

See them little faggots with their uniforms and medals
Yeah buddy them's Elite Wings
That little faggot got an iron assed spaceship
That little faggot he's seen Saturn’s rings

We got to Oo-Haul min’rals and liquor’, fur’n’textiles, machinery-y-y
We got to move these Lave ‘taters. We got to move these Onrira skin cree-eams

I shoulda learned to laser a Tharg’
I shoulda learned to tote them guns
Look at that pilot, he got a GalCop Superannuate
Fund. We got sweet-bugger none.
His uncle’s what? Rear Admiral? Makin’ noises?
Promoted up the ladder like a chimpanzee. Oh,
That ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Credits for nothing and your ships for free

We got to Oo-Haul slaves ‘n narcotics, precious metals and alloy-ee-ees
We got to move these alien doodads. We got to take these contract fee-ee-ees

[Screaming duristeel (heavy metal) Stratocaster instrOomental]
Now that ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Fly a Navy Courier though the Ooni-V
Oh, that ain't workin' that's the way you do it
Credits for nothing and your ships for free
Credits for nothing and your ships for free

Well done, sir! Two thumbs up. 8)

Nice job on the DJing, too.. can I interest you in a wee project I have in mind?

Thanks for the nod. I'll give anything a go once, but the written word is a lot different to the spoken. I can do passable BBC english, refined Australian Uni (or an atrocious outback Aussie; that passes for a foreign language? :D ). Classic DJ...? we'll see.

Why restrict it to DJ, bulletins and ads (by the way, I love a couple of those ads!). If there's enough Oo-lyrics around, there maybe a few Adder garage bands out there willing to give them a crack. Same with jingles - reminds me of the episode "Radio Goodies..." with Graham Gardens pirate eyepatch, "And now 'A Walk In The Black Forest'" Even current (real world) ads might work or a traffic report for a quick couple of sound files - I can't imagine McChucks not being around

I'll transfer these comments back the the 'other project' thread

(3 years later...)

I was reading the old "Breaker Breaker"-thread, and came across the post where Diziet Sma challenges SteveKing to 'do' Money for Nothing.
I had no idea that the challenge had already been accepted and completed at the time, so I decided to try it. Only after writing, but before posting, I looked around and found this thread here, and figured that this would be the appropriate place to post another version of the same song..

"Money from bounties"

I fly to Xexedi

Look at them hunters, thats the way you do it.
At the witchpoint of Xexedi,
They are lurking, right around the buoy
Money from bounties and their loot for free

Now, that ain't working, that's the way you do it
Lemme tell you, them guys ain't dumb
Maybe get a blister on your trigger finger
Maybe get to burn your iron-bum.

We got to fly to Esbeus and Laenin, bring Computers, Machineries
We got to move these cargo containers. We've got to trade commodities

See that Gecko with the fuel scoops and the paint job?
He gets a scratch, he doesn't care.
He's got a Fer-de-Lance parked at the station.
That bounty hunter is a millionaire.

We got to fly to Esbeus and Laenin, bring Computers, Machineries
We got to move these cargo containers. We've got to trade commodities

(Hauler, Mover .. Huh!)

Got to fly to Esbeus and Laenin, bring Computers, Machineries
We got to move these cargo containers. We've got to trade commodities

(Look at him!)

My combat rating is Mostly Harmless
I never fight but always flee
Look at that Mamba, how he's mowing down the pirates,
Man, I wish that were me.

Incoming Missile! What's that? Counter measures!
Lasers banging on the hulls of the pirate fleet
Oh that ain't working, that's the way you do it
Get your money from bounties and your loot for free.

We got to fly to Esbeus and Laenin, bring Computers, Machineries

(Listen here.. now..)

They are lurking, right around the buoy
At the witchpoint of Xexedi,
That ain't working, that's the way you do it
Money from bounties and your loot for free

Get your money from bounties,
Loot for free

(Look at 'em, look at 'em..)

Money from bounties
I fly to
I fly to
Loot for free
I fly to Xexedi

Money from bounties
I fly to
I fly to
Loot for free
I fly to Xexedi

(By the way .. is there a place, like maybe a wiki page, that collects all Oolite music/lyrics? Also, are there any recordings of performances of these?)

There isn't, but we really could use one. The idea of a few members recording performances has been mooted before, too.. sadly, nothing's ever come of it.

Way to late to add rep, but Well done! Different slant on the classic.

If you found this after a few years, I expect you've seen a bunch of the other Oo-Tunes that are back a few pages as well. If not, they are there :)

Quite a number of us at the time had fun with a few different songs. It might just be the impetus I need to create a thread of links to them.

I have compiled this list: List of Oolite Songs (You have an impressive number of entries in this list. [edit to add: especially for someone whose tag line is 'not quite the author'.])
If you know of any songs that are not on it, please add them.

Redspear created this thread: ComOonity Covers - Oolite Orchestrations.

So since that is already taken care of, you can use that impetus to create more songs. :)
