Ah, right... it's the jellyfish from up-thread. Not seen that clip before though (probably 'cos I don't follow ED).
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

Is that definitely a Thargoid? I sort of got the impression it was a different alien species (The Guardians, or something) but wasn't paying much attention so may have confused it with something else.

It did seem rather un-aggressive to be a Thargoid.

It could be anything, really. Everyone seems to be calling it a Thargoid though. Only way to be sure will be when that thing transmits "We’ll use your unusual parking meters for our cutlet!" instead of that huge burp just before the beam.

'Our' Drew is in the news.

My Cobra III is still under a dustcloth somewhere. It will probably take a day or so for the pending updates to be applied to my gaming rig if I ever get the urge to take it out again.

I don't have the time to commit to these big stories...

The Thargoids are back… the same enemy so many of our Commanders feared from the original 1984 Elite.

Today we’re excited to announce that Elite Dangerous 2.4 The Return will launch Quarter 3 of 2017, and you will be in direct conflict with our insectoid friends. These fearsome creatures are unlike anything you’ve come across before in Elite Dangerous, meaning that you’ll have to discover new ways to fight, work together, and defend against their new types of weaponry and armour.

Been so busy with Mass Effect: Andromeda lately that both my E: D and EVE Online Alpha pilots get attention on a bi-weekly basis. Staying in touch with this forum though :D
Plus, the Thargoids won't appear too often outside of the bubble, to bother the explorers, would they?

After building the mystery and suspense for months in a row, they threw this kind of reveal on people's faces just like that. OK, E3 is up and all that stuff, but I personally find this announcement about the Thargoids too pedestrian and meh in the way it's been made. I would really have preferred if they continued to build on the mystery and let the story they started develop itself, without the fanfare. Still, I don't know what exectly they'll do next, so it might still turn out to be interesting. For now, I just think they could have done it a lot better.

"Story develop itself" isn't possible in Elite Dangerous. The game isn't a server-based virtual world or MMO like e.g. EVE Online. It's client based with a small play area having most objects pseudorandomly generated as the player moves around (as in Elite 1984), and what he does with those objects have very little persistent effect on the game.

The only story, such as it is, is 100% scripted by Frontier, comprising in-game objects added by new program versions downloaded every month or so. This quaint model somewhat prangs the "build on the mystery" bit, when players immediately dig each new "secret" out of the program and post the result on YouTube etc. And doesn't help when the latest story segment arrives broken (as almost every one does). The last one Alien Ruins, arrived uncompletable due to bugs. Two months later, it's still unfixed.

It's not all bad though. The guy primarily responsible for all this has just announced he's leaving the project. That's Michael 'You can play offline' Brookes, Executive Producer.

<chuckles> Man, that's harsh but true.

I must confess my Cobra is back in the black again. I've decided that I want to see FD's rendition of a black hole, so I'm off for a short solo jaunt to Sagittarius A*.

I hope that the f'ing Thargoids are outrunnable. That's my usual last-ditch action when it comes to defence...

Re: Elite: Dangerous star chart

Post by Cody »

I was having a turn-out, and I found a Universal Cartographics star chart, still in its cardboard tube.
I believe it was originally part of some KS pledge reward, but it may be generally available now.

As it'll never make it onto my wall, is there an ED freak who's interested in owning it?
