First kills

Post by pleiadian »

I must say I am a bit frustrated at getting the first kills. I probably killed 10 ships by now, but of course, I too died in the process. After at least one kill I constantly mass-lock into other bubbles of bad guys, and since then my ship is in pretty bad shape, I won't last much longer.

How did you achieve the first kills AND got to dock and save?

When your ship is in bad shape, leave the main space lane where most of the traffic is, and cruise in parallel to the safety of the station. Unless you have deep space pirates installed, of course

I'll never forget the first time I made a kill and made it all the way to the station. That was the first time I ever crashed into a station!

Got my first 5 in Rilace (Galaxy 1), a communist system... last one rammed me and blew up. Then some allies came along and saved what was left of my shiny bottom. Warped out to deep space quite a while, then aligned with the station, and docked in safety :)

My commander has changed tactics. He no longer relishes destroying hostiles preferring rather to discourage them. This has been a boon for his courier trade.

<nods sagely> I especially enjoy discouraging Ferdies!
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

What do you mean first time you crashed into the station?
Wow, I was killed heaps of times before I even saw the next station. Never mind the times it took to actually dock!

First time with a kill; Took two kills with my pulse laser, first and second kill on the same journey. That was 40mins or there about. Then getting into the station and lining up. 3 aborted attempts. Sweaty finger stuff. Then the docking. What a relief, hardly a scratch. Used to make a horrible screeching noise when you were too close to the station walls. Or.. "Press Space".

I had less stressful exams when applying to the RAF for a position. Though that was before playing Elite and years before Oolite.

Ooof I remember that horrible screeching noise so well... the sound of rapidly draining shields.

 Ye that's the one, though I always thought of it as the actual hull tearing against a harder blackboard type material.

Also a really good reason to learn to dock at higher speed. No screech, just a quick BOOM, Press Space, try, try.. Try again.

Must admit, getting the first kill as a double was more luck than skill and the docking in the early days was far more stressful than the combat. I mean you managed to get all that way and to lose it in the last 3 seconds!! Huge OUCH.

For you youngsters that didn't play the original Elite. A single jump could take 20mins+ easy. And then to have;
"KGGG (please make it) GGG (please make it) GGGG (please make it) KGGGIKGGEW (damn!)"

The number of time that ended with WHOSH..YEH! wipe the forehead. Wasn't as often as I'd wished.

  Ooliters! Never know how easy it is.
