Parts of player ship visible at full FOV

Post by Astrobe »

I'm not sure if this qualifies as a "bug", but when I set the FOV to max (80°) with the stock Cobra, both in forward and side views I see bits of my own ship. This is not specific to 1.85 nor is it specific to the stock Cobra since I've seen those artefacts on Cobra Mk2 as well.

I wonder why the player ship is drawn; do some ship models use this see-self feature?

It's just view_position, that's a bit too close to the ship at full FOV. I guess configurable FOV wasn't around when the current view_positions were configured.

The high FOV increase your view not only horizontally but vertically also, hence if you use fisheye optics then you should see the nose of your ship below your "cockpit". So for me this is not a bug but a feature. :)

What I would like to request is wider FOV ranges: please allow to set lower minimum and higher maximum values.

Can do, but be aware that you will be seeing ship interiors and weird views if FOV goes too high. 80 deg is a value that gives a reasonably increased view, without giving any such problems. Higher than that will probably introduce strange view effects even in the core ships (unless of course we do a full revision of each ship's view positions).

Also, 30 deg minimum is quite reasonable I think. Anything less than that and you may start introducing strange effects (like nausea) to the more sensitive players. I think that we really shouldn't drop FOV more than what is currrently the minimum.

I like to change the FOV for the task: maximum in dogfight for wider view and less "side effect" due to the slower move of the content, and minimum at sniping to see larger target. This is why I can imagine some more extensions.

I played with FOV for a similar reason: to make additional planets and moons further away. Kind of works, and the fisheye effect isn't too noticeable - it's actually kind of nice and consistent if you believe like me that large canopies on spaceships are as nonsensical as explosion sounds in space, so what we see is an image provided by a video camera (and then the ubiquitous but also often inconsistent lens flare effect would make sense here - not really a sneaky feature request, just ranting).
