Re: Screenshots
Looking at planet_info.plist, it seems to me that planet_distance and radius are not proportional. As a result, when one jumps from WP to WP, the apparent size of the planet from that place doesn't tell you anything about how big the planet actually is.Cody wrote:Erbieder, eh... one of the Rift Worlds. Been through there a few times, but never noticed its size.
The problem in Space is that it's difficult to get a sense of scale, because being twice as far from an object or it being twice as big results in the same apparent size (more or less - the field of view plays a role here).
I think if one specifies the same planet_distance for all systems, it should restore this sense of scale for planets. A nice side effect (imo) is that the travel time to the station will be a constant too. I'll put this theory to the test on the tweaked planet_info.plist for Povray that you provide in an other thread.

Re: Screenshots
I meant I never noticed its size on F7, not visually - and I like different WP/planet distances.

Re: Screenshots
Sadly there isn't a mac trunk yet with these new shaders . The last version compiled was somewhere in september.

I believe Getafix is working on Mac nightlies.
Getafix wrote:While fixing the nightly update mechanism for Windows and Linux, I noticed that the Mac OS X nightly page automated mechanism is broken as of 14/Sep. This is not in the control of terrastorage server scripts, so I can't even try to fix it. Until this case is addressed I will be manually producing the Mac OS X nightly updates on a friend's Mac. This will inevitably result in Mac OS X nightly updates lagging behind Windows and Linux nightly updates.

Re: Screenshots
Just to inform you guys and gals that it is not necessary to remember the alternative Mac trunk-build URL.another_commander wrote:@pagroove: The current trunk Mac nightly is already available here: http://terrastorage.no-ip.info/oolite/s ... c_alt.html
Actually, I do not recommend to remember it as it is prone to variations, being an alternative.
When there is a problem with the normal trunk-build and if an alternative build is available, the normal trunk-build URL will display a disclaimer and automatically redirect to the alternative.
If the disclaimer does not appear and trunk-build is in trouble, it means that I just haven't managed to build an alternative yet.

Re: Screenshots
Some stills from the rescaling experiment without any oxps at play.
If you would like to see the equivelant in the current game then just start up a new commander and Leesti's only one jump away.
Arrival at Leesti:
Up close with an asteroid:
Note that the asteroid is actually the only entity on screen that has kept it's original size.
Approaching the main planet:
And it's still not obvious where the station is.
You might spot it if you look really carefully but remember this is with Leesti being one of the smaller planets.
Now showing up on the compass and just about visible:
This strikes a rather pleasing balance between gameplay and realism for me.
It's nice that you both need the compass to find the station and yet don't need it to recognise when you have done so... if that makes sense.
