I just recently got an Android pad, and as I spent many happy hours with Elite on the BBC-B (umpteen decades ago!), I downloaded the Android port called Alite.
Now this is a pretty close resemblance to the original, but it has one wonderful feature the BBC could never hope to offer - ship control using the accelerometer sensors, so I can "drive" the Cobra rather than merely control it with the keyboard.
Is it conceivable that a Pad interface be introduced for Oolite too? Due to the need for touch-points to control speed, weapons, viewing directions and such-like, I would guess that the clutter might be too much for a smart phone, but even a small pad would be good enough with the main view port still being the PC monitor. So, I guess a bit like a mouse control on steroids.

This is already possible using proper hardware which show up as joystick in the game, once happened accidentally with a laptop.
