Re: Oolite Paper Models
rock hermit asteroid finished
build this is quite simple (cut out piece 1 and 2, glue together, cut out 3 and glue to 1+2, etc) , It took a lot more work divide the parts, their location and numbering
now I will build the smaller version of asteroid

Oolite (egg stone) is a sedimentary rock formed from ooids, spherical grains composed of concentric layers.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

Re: Oolite Paper Models
because I did not know what to do with textures (I believed that .mtl file contains the actual texture and I just do not know, how to load it into Blender), I asked on our papermodeler forum
so I tried to upload .obj file to Metasequoia from the directory where it was the appropriate texture and because the result really surprised me, so I'm definitely a dumb noob
and my own two-day work was completely unnecessary I was now time for texturing, as the model will be printed only on Tuesday
so now I have with my "no graphics skills" only two options:
1) export textured unfolded papercraft model from pepakura designer to image with 600DPI and textures with copy/paste style stretch to all my own parts
(in MS Paint it will be a long and painful process, u see that two-day result above ) ... I mean rock hermit now
2) or I made only white models and everyone can paint it yourself
---
I promise that in the next post finally see photos from building paper model
and meanwhile I found some advices on the forum too, Subject: Skinner’s Den, but for me it is unfortunately only a cluster of letters (my skills are only for Paint ver. XP use)Beny on papermodelers.sk wrote:Toudi .mtl file contains only mapping and reference to the texture, open it with notepad

Re: Oolite Paper Models
Wow, the amount of skill it must take to carefully fold all those triangles to make that rock model - really amazing!
I've just seen that you've got the textures, but just in case it's usefull..
In the Oolite Resources\Textures folder:
oolite_rock_hermit_diffuse.png = the long hexagonal 'tunnel' bit
oolite_rock_hermit_dock_diffuse.png = the box shaped 'docking area' at the end of the tunnel
oolite_rock_hermit_pipes_diffuse.png = the pipes along the tunnel walls
oolite_rock_hermit_tunnel_extras_diffuse.png = the tunnel back wall and some other bits and pieces
The textures have an 'alpha channel' in them for the glow map and is making them look a bit odd, an image editing program could probably remove that from the texture file. If you don't have access to an image editor (XNview is a great free image viewer that has a 'remove alpha channel' option on it's 'Image' menu), then i've done thatand uploaded the files here:
https://app.box.com/s/oq6ywni74agvbln4z46guftektg9z9gj edit: box link not working, download never starts
Hopefully this link will work, it's at my free box.com account - it was misbehaving a while back and not letting anyone download, i've checked the settings and as far as i can see the files should still be downloadable, let me know if it's not working and if you'd still like the textures
In the download I've 'baked' the lightmaps into the textures a bit so they look sort of like they do in game, here's a screenshot, it makes them a bit more cheery

You know, I think this is completely on-topic to Oolite, so it has earned its place in Discussion.
Re: Oolite Paper Models
hi Griff, thx, bigger challenge was make a paper cutout model for everyone (not just for me)Griff wrote:Wow, the amount of skill it must take to carefully fold all those triangles to make that rock model - really amazing!
thx a lot for textures too, I need them all, Metasequoia use original textures for all models fine (sadly withouth alpha channel), the problem was between a chair and keyboard (like usually ), but with other words, I waste whole time uselles, because I must create paper model according to original, not my "fantasies"... and I can´t make for my own models UV map with Blender yet

I've heard that account information has been stolen from DropBox.Griff wrote:wonder what happened to my box account
