Brand Names and Logos: Calling all graphics wizards.

Post by Commander Talbot »

I would like to see some slick corporate style graphics for some of the brand names in the game. I think it would give it something of an authentic feel to the game if a Cobbie would have a Cowell & MgRath Logo on the side. Just a random thought.
You could submit them on this topic.

The Fer de Lance Lightspeeder already has multiple logos such as you describe (if rather subtle).

Such things are unlikely to be particularly noticeable unless you make them quite dominant on a ship's texture.
I used a normalmap to make them stand out just a little.

I'd rather like a Cowell & MgRath corporate logo on my Cobra's dashboard - tried something like it once, but I ain't no gfx wizard.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills

If you have the right graphics hardware, and use Griff Industries ship set, you could replace the player decal (heresy?!). Bit tricky, that, as you would also have to give the decal texture a unique name for the cobbie 3 in shipdata.plist.

Not really a problem. I wasn't planning on doing anything special other than modifying the tex pack itself. This is not going to be an oxp. I just wanted to get your ideas on logos for in game companies.

The game's original 'Elite' style ships had several corporate logos, which were all updated and carried forward into the Classic Ships and Classic Variety Pack expansions. I also designed some new ones as well which also feature on many of the ships. If anybody is interested in using them I could make them available.

Thanks for the info, Smivs. I will check those expansion packs out. And I would be interested in seeing those new logos also, if you would be so kind.

You're the best,

Here's an idea for a Cowell & MgRath logo:

this can be abbreviated to:

I rather like that - very slick! I possibly need to sharpen the image though - shrinking it blurred the text slightly.

Any more graphics wizards out there with ideas for logos?

That's possibly my fault - I uploaded the images at 300dpi. If you convert them to 72dpi they might shrink down better.

<scratches head> I copied that image into GIMP, which apparently likes 72dpi as its default.
Upped the dpi to 300, and it now shrinks a little better - I think. Still room for improvement.

I've resaved them as 72dpi, so hopefully they'll work better.

I've also adjusted the abbreviated logo to incorporate the ampersand:

I ain't too sure about the ampersand in the abbreviated logo. I'll try the 72dpi logo later - thanks.

A terrible typo spotted in the ED Wiki:
... originally manufactured by Cowell & McGrath Shipyard...
Obviously written by someone with no soul. The in-game description has it right though.

I think it makes it a better shape … easy to delete though if you want!

Yes, MgRath is correct. Possibly it was McRath or McGrath at some point, but these things change over time. My favourite is McHarg, which was originally Graham. A large number of Grahams - as notorious a mob of Border reivers as you could hope to avoid - were exported to Ulster in the 17th century on the grounds that, if they were going to kill and despoil people, they might as well do it to Catholics. Some of the Grahams sneaked back, and reversed their names to disguise their identity (Maharg - a much better disguise in a largely illiterate society than it would be today). Over time, some of the Mahargs, probably by assumption, have become McHargs and MacHargs …

How about the stamped into metal look, or its inverse (embossed)?
