The UK referendum and subsequent surge in physical and verbal racist abuse

We had a thread here about the referendum, before the result. Well, here's hopefully the start of one now that we know the result.

One thing in particular I'd like to discuss: the safety-pin idea - see e.g. here on the BBC (though in large measure this is reporting - or 'reporting' - on Twitter) and here on the Independent (which is similarly Twittery - although the thing started on Twitter).

I suppose badges might work better, but it's easier to get a pin.

The purpose is, I take it, to express solidarity and thereby deter attacks. One might find oneself obliged to intervene, though . .

Thanks for posting this - I had not seen this before. An upsurge in xenophobic nastiness was always a likely consequence of this vote whichever way it went I'm afraid, so I for one am supporting this and my safety pin will be with me whenever I am out and about.

Moderators - The other thread is still active and covers all aspects of the vote and its aftermath and consequences, so could the two maybe be merged. We don't need two threads on the same subject.
