Re: Windows Update
Smivs, I find what you said useful.
The icons on my desktop are folders and files, not (mostly) applications. So they couldn't be replaced by a dock or panel or launcher. Still, I hadn't thought of using multiple desktops and just having one 'fence' worth of icons on each. That's a good idea. But I do think my 'fences' look nice. Here's a partial, and slightly fuzzy I'm afraid, screenshot: http://imgur.com/z3q4Q2X (I've forgotton how to do linked images properly . .)

Re: Windows Update
By the way: Cody and any others who are having trouble with Windows Update not . . doing updates, you might want to give the relevant repair function of the 'Tweaking.com Windows Repair' tool a go. I can't attest to that fix working but, as a whole, I find that the tool seems to have got quite good in recent months. I wouldn't run all its fixes willy-nilly, though . . (especially the ones to do with permissions).
The tool is available here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details ... epair.html

Re: Windows Update
Windows 10 is somewhat annoying - and ugly! Classic Shell will be installed soon, methinks - Win7 is so easy on the eye.Cody wrote:I intend to upgrade it from W7 to WX before the free offer expires...

Re: Windows Update
i find win 10 better than win 8.1 but i must advise to run something like spybot's anti beacon software to disable most if not all of the telemetry that win 10 sends back to MS....
Arthur: OK. Leave this to me. I'm British. I know how to queue.

Re: Windows Update
It makes me angry too - so angry, in fact, that, I won't use 10, though admittedly UI problems and lack of control over updates are factors too.

Re: Windows Update and Windows 10 stuff
I think many fixes only work with Pro and Enterprise/Education editions - those with Home have less control.

Re: Windows Update and Windows 10 stuff
anti beacon works with all versions of win 10 , and i think the win update was a registry key added or changed. cant remember it was 6 months ago.

Windows 10 stuff
Conclusion: I do not like WX - too ugly, too controlling!

Re: Windows 10 stuff

Re: Windows 10 stuff
After three weeks, it's back to the Win7 machine - so much nicer, both the OS and the machine.
With any luck, I'll get my desk re-assembled (and the joystick operational) this week too.

Re: Windows 10 stuff
i am used to it now. its a lot more like win 7 than 8 or 8.1 ever was. once you go through and disable services you dont want its quite fine. basically stopping the same services that i did in win 7.
my biggest niggle with it is the persistant use of the word "app" . i really hate that. i run programs and game programs NOT bloody "apps". this is a PC not a damn ipad!!!
off to google if i can change the text in the start menu from all apps to all programs.......
EDIT : damn useless logitech G11 keyboard.. keeps missing the "e's"

Re: Windows 10 stuff
I'll stick with Win7 - unless I find a need for DirectX 12, of course. Unlikely, but you never know.

Re: Windows 10 stuff
I found that if you stick Classic Shell on any Win8/8.1/10 system and you almost have everything that was good about Win7 with everything that's good about the later releases.
