Isolated stars

Post by OldThrashbarg »

I've read about "islands" of Systems that can't be reached in Playing the Native Version 1.77.1, i've found three Systems in Galaxy 6 called Qutius, Beanxeat, Estebiin and Tetier.
What if i want to get there? Why are they isolated?

That's just the way the chart is - and you can reach them (using a gal-drive from G5), but you'd need OXP kit to leave.
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

The biggest group of isolated systems is in Galaxy Chart 7. They can be reached using just the core game, with considerable difficulty.

I'd have said with considerable patience, rather than difficulty.

For some, having patience is difficult.
But I was referring more to what happens in the midway part/s. That can be rather difficult for a new(ish/er) player with just the core game.

Once at midway, the player only has to select the hyperspace destination (or have it pre-selected) and hit jump!

If you wish to have a visual representation of the systems in question then you can do a lot worse than downloading a Gazetteer!

or

and look for vector maps: "The most pleasing way, to find your way around the known universe."

Last bit first - they are isolated because they are more than 7LY from any other system and have very low TL. This means you cannot leave them by doing a normal hyperjump and cannot buy a galactic hyperdrive there. For this reason you normally cannot jump to them from the previous galaxy.
Some can be reached by using features of the core game craftily, but many can't. Extra fuel OXPs will allow you to visit some of them, and all are reacheable using the the (OXP) GalDrivePod providing you know the correct jump-off points.

These stars are isolated because the brisk and shallow Hollywood lifestyle leaves them unable to form permanent social relationships!

...*cough* I'll just be over here.

To which I would add; they are more than 7LY from any other system because Oolite perforce uses the same algorithm to generate the charts that the original Elite did. Thus, Oolite merely reproduces the same oddities that procedural generation caused in the original game.

I think I'd have said "should not", rather than "cannot".

Thanks for the chuckle! 8)
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

Even the core game can spit a few Thargoids out at interstellar space. And those quickly start making Thargons for more fun. Even if you have the destination system already selected in the system chart, the 15 second countdown might be too long if you're unlucky. Barring that, I haven't checked to see if the Thargoid swarm follows you through your wormhole...if it does, even escaping interstellar space may not be enough. If Thargoids don't follow, assassins and pirates might be waiting for you at the destination system.

Having got as far as G7, if a player still can't evade for fifteen seconds, they shouldn't even be attempting to cross the Great Rift.
I've never seen Thargoids follow me out of IS in the core game. McLane's Wormhole Restoration OXP had that possibility though.
