Escape pods getting turned into slaves

I was on a run and, after a protracted battle, ended up scooping 3 escape pods. I spotted a rock hermit nearby and through I'd offload the pods to make room for any cargo on the rest of my run into the station. But when I docked, only 1 escape pod was displayed in the arrival report. The other two pods were converted into slaves and stayed that way. When I docked at the main station they were still slaves. Has anyone else seen this sort of thing?

Which message did you get when you scooped the two pods? Was it something like 'you rescued a slave'? Or was it 'you rescued/captured [name]'?

Oooh, you got me. I don't think it said I'd rescued a slave. I thought it came up with a name each time, but I'm not 100% on that.
