Font project

Post by phkb »

I'm doing a little mini-project of gathering all the Oolite font files from around the board and plan on adding a special wiki page with examples of each. One question, though: are font files considered ambience, or retextures? Technically I guess you'd call them a retexture, but a new font adds quite a bit to the ambience of the game. What do you think?

I'd say Ambience. I think 'retextures' in Oolite terms is more to do with re-skinning entities within the game - ships and so forth.
The wiki page is a good idea BTW :)

Interesting project. I tested some older fonts with Market Observer and noticed that they did not work properly. Probably because of the hairspace character I'm using (introduced in Oolite 1.77 IIRC). So those older sets would need a little tuning.

Here's what I have so far:
Wiki page

I fixed the hair space in the Tty font by Kaks, made it version 0.6.

I have also released 2 new fonts:

OCR A Extended is a full implementation of the OCR A Extended character set. Improves on the Standalone font.

Xolonium is a futuristic font designed by Severin Meyer at http://openfontlibrary.org/en/font/xolonium. I think it looks pretty cool. It's wide though, so some screens that use columns might struggle. Latest version of Market Observer works with this font, though, so it's not all bad!

I've also added all the fonts to the download manager.

Please let me know if I've missed something!

Hi! There's a couple of fonts that wont'install.
Standalone and Dangerous Square.
When trying to download with expansion manager, I get a failure and an error in the log file.

Code: Select all

09:06:38.398 [oxz.manager.error]: Downloaded OXZ does not have the same identifer and version as expected. This might be due to your manifests list being out of date - try updating it.
I'm using Oolite 1.82 and my expansions list is updated.

Thanks Tichy. I've updated the files and manifests and I think all the fonts can now be successfully downloaded.

Nice job! 8)
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

I've just updated the Xolonium and OCR A Extended font packs to version 1.1, fixing a few issues with the extended character set positions.

If you use Xolonium, you might be interested in a tweak to fix the column layout issue that wide fonts create: https://bb.oolite.space/viewtopic.php?f= ... 50#p240262
