Stutters have always been there and there are still in the latest trunk, you just haven't happened to notice them yet. <snip> Plus, I don't see how you can possibly have stutters in 1.82 and not in 1.83 trunk, given that the only change between the two so far is the version number displayed on screen and log. ;-)
Ah, OK, thanks. I did wonder if the current trunk was still the same, but thought it was worth a mention. My previous trunk was quite an old version (1.82.0.6488) so perhaps that predates any changes. Anyway it's all looking good, and I'll watch out for the stutters.
@kanthoney - no, same small set of OXPs.
Apologies for adding to the confusion...

there's still a biggish drop in frame rate in the launch tunnel and in hyperspace, down from 50-60 to 20-30 in those two situations, but it feels a little less jerky. Maybe there was something else going on that made it more more obtrusive previously.
If you're using BGS, the launch/hyperspace shaders are some of the heaviest in the game, and reduced frame rate is expected.
Yes, both shaders are expensive. Specially the docking shader is slow and the dynamic branching may cause additional slowdowns (e.g. on Intel gfx cards).

The only differences between "shaders enabled" and "extra detail" at the moment are:
- extra detail has more detailed explosions
- extra detail has more complex explosions (new in 1.82)
- extra detail has bigger planet textures (new in 1.82)
You shouldn't notice a huge difference from 1.80's graphics by going back to "shaders enabled"
Well, that's something to keep in mind, I suppose. I'm using a separate planetary texture OXP anyhow-- Deep Horizons Systems-- and don't know that I'm worried about the 'improved' planet textures of 1.82. I'll run a few comparisons and see.

Interesting, I didn't think of the image file size. I've been trimming image files in some OXP's down by re-saving them (using Paint.net) in a smaller format, but that was more to save hard drive space. Perhaps this little trick has been giving me smoother performance than I'd otherwise have had in 1.80.
Reports of my death have been greatly underestimated.

No complaints, only praise for 1.82. Frame rate still rock steady 85 fps. I play with minimal set of AddOns and no planet textures as I like the stock ones very much, thank you. As an interstellar courier, Oolife is now more dangerous. Really like the improved NPC AI's. One observation: It seems the laser overheat rate is slower or am I hallucinating?

Why do they have to be mutually exclusive?

The laser can be overheating slower /and/ you can be hallucinating! :D

How many fingers are floating around my hand with tiny fingerpuppet faces on them?

Yes, but the damage amount is smaller also. The good news is the laser power of your enemies is smaller also.
