HD background images

Please post nice sci-fi pictures into this topic which maybe usable as mission screen background in OXPs.
I suggest to find images in at least 1920x1080 resolution.

You can make small thumbnails using postimage.org due to the max. insertable size in this forum is 1000x800.
The best if a smaller picture is pasted here and enclosed in an url tag to the source, like this:

OXP developers can use this code in .plist to display HD images in full resolution:

Some are fitting and some not so fitting for the Oolite universe. I think we need more custom made images and not lending from sites like Deviantart.

Custom images surely fit better but a general image still better than a black backgroud imho. Maybe some images can be the base of customizations, for example if somebody put an Oolite ship into an empty dock.

I'm worried about this issue as using the images as backgrounds to an OXP may not be allowed depending on their licences.

The ability to download an image at high-def on DeviantArt does /not/ remove the original artist's copyright on the material.

JazHaz is right-- you will need to contact the original artist and get permission before using anything you find on DeviantArt.

It might even be necessary for them to license the work under Creative Commons for it to be in accord with other materials used in Oolite OXP's.

Still, I'm sure there are some that would suit. For the sake of a couple of emails, what's the worst that could happen - "No, sorry, I would rather not".

The way I look at it, if an artists image is out there, it's being seen. If only one percent of viewers follow up enough to find out who the artist is, then the 'free' image has done it's job. I presume registering anything under CCL is relatively simple, so it's only down to the original artist to make the effort. Given the (generally) quick responses for squashing bugs around here, our 'artists' are happy to put in that sort of effort into their creations

If you're looking for already-licensed stuff, then http://opengameart.org/ lets you search by license (though because of what it is, they only have CC-BY-SA stuff, not CC-BY-NC-SA, so it may not be particularly useful for many existing OXPs. There's a few CC0 ones, though)

For the New Cargoes backdrops I went looking for CC-BY-SA images of industrial and business sites on Wikimedia Commons, then did some post-processing to make them look less 20th century. Again, they don't tend to have the -NC stuff, so not always useful.

http://www.flickr.com/ has some space-style art as well as photos under various CC licenses: the license statements can be found on the photo full pages. Some of them are just CC-BY, which will fit with either -NC or not - it just requires a source credit in the documentation.
