Map zoom to cursor

Post by jh145 »

The ability to zoom and in to and out of the map is a wonderful thing, but can we please have it zoom to the cursor, not to the centre of the screen?

If I hover over an off-centre feature and zoom, that feature should remain under the mouse pointer.

There are various ways of handling the chart interface, each with pros and cons. Some may find that this proposal would inconvenience them. I think it's more a matter of getting used to the way it works (whatever way that might be) rather than anything else. In any case, this is something that can be discussed in more detail post-1.82, as no functional changes are going in anymore, just bug fixes.

Of course this is a post-1.82 suggestion. Doesn't prevent me offering it during 1.82 lockdown though :?

It can be discussed in detail now, if anyone has an interest in the subject.

You are right, it can certainly be discussed now. I did not mean to imply that the discussion is shut down, sorry if it came across that way.

I'm pretty sure I tried it that way but ran into problems. For example if you picked a system at the edge of the map then zoomed out a little and then back in again the map would pan around quite horribly to centre the system. So it ended up as it is.

I might have another play around with it post 1.82, but it's one of those things that's much more fiddly to get right than it looks.
