Hi there everyone,
Firstly, thank you all so much for a brilliant game, Oolite is what Elite looked like in my mind when I played the original on my Beeb. Some 30 years on it looks better than I ever imagined and it even runs a treat on my rather dated IBM T40, I don't know how you do it, but I'm glad you do!!!
Since my Beeb days I have been fortunate enough to work in the space business for real and one thing space-borne cameras do a lot is take pictures in all sorts of regions of the EM spectrum other than visible. E.g. radio, microwave, infra-red, UV and on into x-rays and gamma rays. These can reveal all sorts of features not normally visible e.g. x-ray jet emission from black holes and microwave emissions from nebulae normally hidden by interstellar dust. In infra-red or microwave, targets or entities that are normally very dimly lit by visible light might be shown up, with a suitably equipped ship?
These days my coding exploits are limited to Matlab code for designing antennas, so I'm not sure I'll get the time to master Oxp writing, best leave it to you the professionals! Anyway, perhaps some ideas for you?
Thanks again for allowing me to re-live a bit of my childhood, fantastic!

Welcome Commander Beanz
Is your link for multi spectral views?
The server timed out on me.

Re: Multi spectral views
Hello Day,
Thank you for the welcome.
The link was just just to part of my website about antenna design for anyone that was interested, antennas form a large part of real spacecraft design. I also had a couple of images I wanted to attach to the original post, e.g. how a Cobra Mk3 might look in infra-red. I thought I could put the images on part of my site and then link to them, if the links work?
Kind regards
Beanz

Welcome to the Board, Beanz.
Posting pics on your website should work - that's what I do. Looking forward to seeing some of them

Hi there folks,
Thank you for the kind comments.
Here's the link to my Oolite musings and the Multi Spectral HUD idea.

A medium power fusion source, eh? Interesting!
I would advise stilts for the quagmires, and camels for the snowy hills
And any survivors, their debts I will certainly pay. There's always a way!

I rarely clap when reading suggestions, but...
[EDIT]Seems like the rest of my message was lost in cyberspace.
I love this idea. It would make hit-and-run assassinations a lot more interesting. Imagine if the AI would utilize the different spectrums; Running away with overheated lasers, injectors blazing would leave you exposed even if you had a stealth module. To balance this you could purchase ceramic armor(not unlike the heat shielding in vanilla) that masks most of your heat singature. Naturally the captured heat would turn your cabin into a sauna/crematory/furnace.

Well, well, well...
I'm interested in seeing the game experiences brought by such an oxp

In-deed. Most interesting display. Reminds me of a hands-on exhibit at a science museum. Still not entirely certain of the in-game effects of having such views-- heat signatures that let you ID ship power levels, perhaps, or follow fleeing vessels, in addition to the coronal mass ejections you suggest. But I am, at the very least, most interested in seeing more of where you are going with this!
Reports of my death have been greatly underestimated.

Hi folks,
I probably should point out that MS HUDs is just a flight of fancy on my part. Implementing the idea as I have proposed it would be a huge job and way beyond me; my coding efforts are limited to Matlab scripts these days, mainly this jobby :
http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/ ... olbox-v2-5
However, if anyone wants to run with any or part of the idea, feel free.
I'd probably be better off honing my piloting skills, which still leave a little to be desired! A Cobra Mk3 never looks good wedged sideways in a docking port!
Cheers,
Beanz
