That is amazing! I remember a few years ago somebody suggested that if all road signs and markings were removed the traffic would flow better and things would actually be safer. Looks like they might have been on to something, although it does look terrifying.

Heh! That is speeded-up of course, but I've seen stuff like it in India - crossing the road is fraught with danger!

It's not really anarchic though. Everyone is following the same rules, it just looks chaotic to the outside regulated western eyes.

i can see only 2 rules being followed here.

1) drive on the wrong side of the road.( yes i know its the right side for a lot of you )
2) dont actually hit anything.

i see its speeded up but the speed of some of those buses barreling through make me shudder...

Agreed. That sums it up well.

Interesting fact.. there's a country in Europe (I forget which), where, when a new road is opened up, they set up equipment to measure the speed of the traffic for a few weeks, and whatever is the typical speed driven on that stretch, becomes the posted speed limit. It's based on the quite sound principle that, left to their own devices, most people will drive at a sensible and appropriate speed for the conditions on that particular road. Far better than arbitrary, formulaic rules made by someone miles away, sitting in an air-conditioned office, totally disconnected from the situation on the ground.

Yup.. coulda told you that.. in fact, there's a book by that title (almost).. Anarchy Works, by Peter Gelderloos. It's a great read, and is free to download or read online. I highly recommend it, (and particularly for those who don't think it could work).

And I didn't know about Colin Ward's book.. thanks!

People might find some of Gelderloos' other work somewhat, umm.. confronting.. but if that's the case, I suggest they take the time to see what he actually has to say. He makes a good case for his views, and certainly helped change my mind on a number of things.
