a couple of problems related to OXZ manager...

Post by spud42 »

first cant seem to d/l NoShader fullsize station textures, it stalls on the d/l screen and i have to cancel to continue. yes i have waited for 10 minutes so it wasnt just a slow d/l im also on 100MB fibre so i usually dont have speed problems. is the package not available right now?

second, work have given me a surface pro 3 to test if we can get all our pdf forms and manuals and firmwares to work on one device. ( cheapskates only got the i3 64GB version) . i have added a 32GB micro SDHC card and have installed oolite ( of course i did..lol) runs fine but i cant connect to the OXZ manager keeps giving me an error. i have allowed oolite through the firewall so i cant think of what else might be interfering.. its got Win 8.1 on it if that makes any difference. if it turns out to be bloody Trend buisness getting in the way then i can just manually install them but it's a pain with 30+ OXZ to install....doh scratch that i can just copy from my desktop install...

A few things to try:
  • If you're on Windows there's a problem with how the GNUstep library there queue's up events during the download process, which makes the GUI freeze and the download slow, once more than about 20Mb have been downloaded. There's a fix for that in the nightly builds - it might be worth downloading one to see if that works better.
  • You can download OXZs manually using the links on http://www.oolite.org/oxps/ (last column of the table). If that doesn't work, it's not Oolite that's the problem; if it does work at least you have the file...

It's also perhaps worth trying again a few hours later.. I've noticed that now and then the wiki server (where most OXZs are hosted) is unresponsive.. generally at a time that's inconvenient here in Oz, so it probably wouldn't be for the US/EU. My guess is that's when scheduled maintenance & backups is taking place.

they were first attempts at d/l at minutes before the times on the post. i had oolite open on one monitor and the forum open on the other. 10 minutes after i posted i did download those OXZ so as Dizzy said it might have been the server being unresponsive.

i think on the surface pro the problem is what our IT dept did to the win 8.1 install with their group policies etc... i cant even do a windows update at home! only at the office when on the domain. the Buggers have blocked youtube!! and trying to get to oolite web site on the tablet is DNS blocked.... so i think its manual install for that toy...

DNS blocks are not hard to get around if you can edit the 'hosts' file*.. it's located in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

* Probably unlikely, given how they have things locked down.. but you never know 'til you try..

Just add this line at the end of the file:

Code: Select all

195.74.38.129 oolite.org # Oolite Webserver
Once this is done, the tablet won't need to make a DNS request at all.. because it will already know the IP address..

Do you know where it is on a Windows 8.1 machine?

I've noticed this, too. I had the problem today in the early morning hours here in Moutain time.

I haven't tried this on Windows, but I had to figure out how to do it on Linux the other day when I screwed up a machine's name on a Mint install. Cool thing to know how to do... 8)

nice try Dizzy. host file is there and i added the line to the host file after a bit of drama.. you cant edit andsave inthe etc folder . i had to copy it to another folder edit and save then copy it back to etc folder. did a restart and i still get almost immediate failure when trying to download the OXZ list on the manager. annoying but as we can add them manually its no big deal..
