A Graceful Retirement

Post by Thargoid »

I've been giving this some thought over the past few weeks, and have come to a decision. As my free time is becoming somewhat limited, and there are some new toys I have to play with (mainly Raspberry Pi related), I don't really have much time to spend on Oolite and on my OXP library.

So rather than trying to keep up (especially given what a fine job Cim is doing in progressing new stuff for 1.82 and beyond), I've made a decision to retire from OXP production and support. To this end I hereby place my entire OXP/OXZ catalogue up for offer if anyone wishes to take over the administration, upkeep and improvement of them (either as a group or piecemeal). Currently the OXZ versions are on the wiki, so that part should be simple (although the filenaming of them is a bit screwed up version-wise). The OXPs are on my box account, but can be handed over and taken down from there as required.

I'm not going away completely, and will probably still lurk around here and annoy people on a semi-regular basis. And who knows, I might even occasionally actually play the game again.

If people do want to take over particular OXP/Z(s) please let me know here, or even better if someone would care to administer their distribution it would be nice, as I'm soon on a long business trip and won't have much time in the next 2-3 weeks at least...

Thargoid. Thank you for making all those great OXP's. I understand that keeping up is difficult. I myself find considering the same thing but still do some update work now and then. But without you a lot oxp's wouldn't exist. Make sure you keep hanging around though. An occasional Thargoid Incursion freshens things up. :D

Enjoy your new pastures, Thargoid.. you will be sorely missed.

Many, many thanks for all your work, and contributions over the years.
Most games have some sort of paddling-pool-and-water-wings beginning to ease you in: Oolite takes the rather more Darwinian approach of heaving you straight into the ocean, often with a brick or two in your pockets for luck. ~ Disembodied

I'm very sorry to hear that, but understand completely...it sometimes feels like a full time job with unpaid overtime required! Enjoy whatever you decide to do, and we'll hope to see you here again soon, and often.

Thargoid: you've written an amazing number of expansion packs; and you've helped me learn how javascript and Oolite works. I really appreciate all that - and the packs of yours that I like best are Hired Guns, Energy Equipment, Flight Log, Armoury, Fuel Station, Second Wave, PlanetFall, Naval Grid . . and, well, most of them, really.

All the best to you!

Have they all retired? I knew some of them had . . Come to think of it, I recall at least most of them going. Wow.

Not all :)
CheeseRedux has recently returned I'm happy to say, and Gimi is still with us, just very busy with RL(TM). Jens (Ahruman) still visits often as does Giles (Aegidian), although as far as I know niether are active. Commander McLane has not left us, but is on one of his extended absences - I'm sure he'll be back.
